Hello everyone, I’m currently trying to assemble my new BILLY shelf, but the instructions seem quite unclear in some parts and I’m a bit stuck. I find the installation of the back panel particularly problematic, as well as how exactly the individual shelves should be securely fixed. It would be great if someone could offer specific tips or a more detailed explanation for these steps. Maybe there are also common pitfalls during assembly that it would be helpful to know about in advance? Thanks in advance!
Hi Non_ni,
regarding the back panels of the BILLY shelf: These are usually very thin panels that need to be slid into a groove and tongue joint. The manual is basically correct but lacks detailed instructions. You need to make sure to install the back panel straight and securely, as otherwise it won’t provide enough stability. A common mistake is to install the back panel too early – it’s better to complete the side panels and the base frame first.
To secure the shelves: This is usually done with plastic or metal dowels that are inserted into pre-drilled holes on the side strips, onto which the shelves are then placed. It’s important to position the dowels precisely in the holes; otherwise, the shelves will not rest evenly. Applying a little downward pressure when inserting helps.
Have you already found out if your version of the BILLY shelf might differ somewhat? There are various materials and models, some back panels are a bit sturdier, or the drilling patterns are slightly different. Depending on the type, the procedure could vary a little. If you have more specific details, feel free to add them.

To address the issues with back panel installation and shelf fixing more specifically, here are some helpful tips based on my experience:
1. Back Panel: Before installation, check the rear edges of the side panels for any irregularities. If the back panel does not fit properly, gently align it while simultaneously securing the bottom and top screws to stabilize the side panels.
2. Shelf Fixing: Shelves are usually fixed using plastic dowels or metal pins. It is important to insert these evenly with consistent pressure. A tool like a small rubber mallet can help with this without damaging the wood.
3. Often underestimated is the idea of using the assembly instructions as a rough guide and pre-sorting and checking the components beforehand. This makes assembly easier and prevents problems when fixing the parts later on.
Additionally, I recommend checking the installation surface beforehand: An uneven floor makes it difficult to align the shelf precisely, which can cause issues when fitting the back panel and shelves later.

I initially tried assembling the shelf without the back panel and was completely overwhelmed because it was unstable. Another issue that concerned me was aligning the shelves. Sometimes the dowel isn’t perfectly secure, and that feels unstable.

It also helped me to quickly check the shelf with a square before starting to ensure everything stays at right angles. Individual parts can easily become misaligned, and then the back panel won’t fit properly in the end.
I think a step-by-step guide with clear pictures or even videos would be very helpful for the BILLY shelf to better understand these small details. Especially for beginners, it makes assembling much more relaxed.
