Hello,

I am planning a full renovation (core refurbishment) of a house this year. I would like to use smart home technology, and the new "matter" standard seems to be a good choice. Unfortunately, it is not yet available on the market. Therefore, I want to keep the option open to later upgrade the components in the house with matter-compatible devices to make them "smart."

What is the best way to approach this? I am not very experienced and would appreciate any tips.

Some ideas I have for lighting and shutter/blind controls:

  • Install push buttons instead of switches everywhere
  • Flush-mounted boxes should be deep enough (at least 60mm (2.4 inches)?) to allow for installing flush-mounted devices later

How should I handle motion detectors? Can these be made "smart" later, or do I need to choose specific ones already?

How should I proceed with a video doorbell? Are there any recommendations regarding the approach?

I would really appreciate your help.

Thank you,

Carlo

You should read up on network topologies, as it only makes sense with a star network, which is what you are aiming for.

The moment you start working with the electrical installation, you need to make a firm decision. Otherwise, do some thorough research on Matter. It seems like you may still have some fundamental gaps in understanding. Matter is not a system itself but aims to unify various systems from the consumer smart home world and provide a compatibility layer somewhere between IP and Zigbee. Generally, it targets retrofitters who place Wi-Fi actuators behind their existing switches or stick Zigbee switches directly to the wall.

In your case, I would recommend a wired solution (which I would always prefer anyway). The current standard for this is KNX.

There is a "simple" solution:
Install enough LAN cables and sufficient Wi-Fi hotspots.
Use KNX for control. This way, you can manage everything and make it truly smart. You could also integrate digital assistants with this.

Matter is designed for retrofitting existing systems and apartments, where you basically have to "stick something on the wall" because you cannot make any changes to the basic structure (which includes the electrical system) without the landlord’s consent and the associated paperwork. Not to mention that even for a simple light switch replacement, a qualified electrician must be called.

If you are undertaking a full renovation, you should do it properly and thoroughly.
