Hello everyone,
the largest and presumably most expensive renovation will be our 11sqm (118sq ft) bathroom. The layout is planned to remain the same (so the length of the sink, bathtub, etc., will not change). Next week, the plumber will come for a cost estimate, and I want to be somewhat prepared.
A few questions to the group: Do the pipes need to be replaced? How can I tell as a layperson if they do?
How does this usually work—will all the pipes be replaced, including the drainage and those inside the walls?
What can such work typically cost or be allowed to cost?
For cost reasons, is it possible to simply tile over the existing tiles, or is it better to gut the entire bathroom?
Thanks to all!

Yes, the internet era—
when talking to the heating/plumbing specialist in the office, you could still glance at the shelves to see which folders were there.
For our plumbing, for example, it's Ideal Standard,
which is installed thousands of times in prefabricated apartment buildings. Most manufacturers offer affordable basic product lines.

chand198614 Feb 2023 11:49Renovating a 7 sqm (75 sq ft) bathroom here (Ruhr area) costs about 25,000€. However, we went all out on the tiles; the decorative tiles for the shower wall and partition wall cost 90€/sqm (9 sq ft) just wholesale.
Tub out, large rain shower in, new furniture, new tiles. New fittings, new radiator, new washbasin. The prices from bathroom suppliers are almost outrageous, but the contractor only installs what he sources from them.

Golden faucets? Unbelievable that it should cost that much.

We have now received a quote. The plumber has priced in an affordable series from a brand (probably the store brand). Quality is good, but the design is really not acceptable (in our opinion). The prices at bathroom showrooms are not justified, so we are looking for series/brands that offer good quality without being overpriced.
Any ideas? How are we supposed to evaluate that?Show us the design and the quote.
I don’t quite understand your question. Please show us photos and the existing floor plan.
Are the tiles all still firmly attached? Just tap on them, then you can hear if they are secure.
Are the pipes made of copper? If so, they can stay in place.

Golden faucets? Unbelievable what that’s supposed to cost. We knew the prices from friends who are currently renovating.
We are doing the demolition completely ourselves.
I have the quote here, just some examples:
- Tiling work 100€/m² (9.3 €/ft²), includes surcharge for 120 x 60 cm (47 x 24 inch) tiles
- 84 man-hours, half at 60€/hour, the other half as helper hours at 40€/hour
- Towel radiator 1,000€ (!)
- Washbasin + countertop + faucet 1,900€ (!!)
- Tall cabinet + base cabinet for washbasin 1,500€ (!!!)
- Tile purchase 1,100€ (self-chosen, own fault ;-) )
Just a snippet to show how it adds up. The prices, when purchasing fittings through the specialist company, are just as ridiculous as those for kitchen appliances through kitchen studios.
