ᐅ Basement: Surface-Mounted or Flush-Mounted Wiring?

Hello everyone,

Our new build is currently under construction, being delivered as a turnkey project. All electrical wiring in the basement is installed surface-mounted, which is quite common for basements.

However, I am considering converting one basement room into a home office in a few years, and I would like it to have a more finished, “livable” appearance. Therefore, I want to ask how complicated it is to later change from surface-mounted to flush-mounted installation. I am especially thinking about the ceiling light outlets and electrical sockets on the basement exterior walls.

Thank you in advance for your answers.

The light outlet should be the least of your problems. Just nail the conduit, then cover it with plaster now or later, and you’re done. No need to go through the ceiling.

At first, I considered a suspended ceiling, but with a ceiling height of 2.30 meters (7 ft 7 in), that probably isn’t an option.

Many building codes require a minimum ceiling height of 2.40 meters (7 ft 10 in) for living spaces. What about window size? Means of egress?

Hello again,
thank you very much for your responses and interesting suggestions. The light outlets will now be drilled through the ceiling after all, which I am very happy about. Since the sockets in the basement are otherwise surface-mounted, I will take up your suggestions to make the basement feel more comfortable, even though it is, of course, not a traditional living space.
Best regards
