Hello forum,

Unfortunately, I couldn’t find the right information using the search function. Since my wife and I are beginners in this matter, we are turning to your collective expertise.

Here is the situation: We are buying a turnkey semi-detached house from a developer. It has a fully basement made of waterproof concrete. The developer will not do any further finishing of the basement, meaning we will receive the plain concrete slab. The basement area is about 52 sqm (560 sq ft).

The basement will be used for technical installations (connections, district heating, etc.), as a laundry room, and for storage. Especially for doing laundry, a plain concrete floor is not very pleasant.

What kind of finishing would you recommend? We would like to do as much as possible ourselves and, well, it should be reasonably affordable.

Thank you very much and best regards,
Leonbra

I would go with tiles. You can do it yourself, and if you’ve never done it before, start with the least important room ^^ I always find tiles best for these rooms – they are durable, long-lasting, and easy to keep clean.

But you do realize this is about a single basement, right? Where the technical equipment, washing machine, and cans and bottles are stored?

First, either have the surface sanded or level it yourself with about one centimeter (0.4 inches) of self-leveling compound. Then you can install the final floor covering or simply paint it.

For a durable final floor covering, tiles in an economical format are a good option, as well as PVC sheet flooring. More expensive alternatives are linoleum or (my favorite) rubber flooring; in these cases, it’s worth searching for leftover rolls.

Are the door frames provided by the general contractor? If so, that’s fine. Otherwise, make sure to inform the door installer about the finished floor covering so the frames can be installed at the correct height.

What about the staircase? The base step is concreted in such a way that the later floor structure / screed is taken into account.
