Hello

we are looking for suitable baseboards for our floor (Modular One)

Which would you recommend for a new build?

Solid wood or MDF? Painted or laminated?

What are the advantages and disadvantages?

We definitely want to clip the baseboards on rather than glue them.

I have had bad experiences with clips; it really only worked well with plastic strips. But that was in an older building and almost 20 years ago, so maybe things have changed since then. Currently, I am using painted real wood trim and gluing it. However, I’m not finished yet 😀

In our first house, we used MDF (laminated) for these. I would choose them again. They looked high-quality, were affordable, and easy to cut and install. However, I have no experience with clipping systems.
In the new house, we are getting solid wood, as specified in our construction contract. I haven’t reached that stage yet, so I can’t provide a comparison.

We also painted the wood. It’s a bit more premium and more resistant to impacts (toys, vacuum cleaner, etc.).

I would always recommend gluing. Borrow a good heavy-duty glue gun and get started...

For the top edges, I would fill them with L10 for a flush finish.

I think opinions on this differ.

What height would you recommend for the baseboards? 40, 50, or 58mm (1.6, 2.0, or 2.3 inches)? We would prefer a straight profile.

MDF with clips works great, we use it too.
The downside of the clips is that when you remove them again, they tend to damage the back of the MDF slightly, and then they don’t hold well anymore.
So it’s best to do it right the first time, then it will be fine.
