ᐅ Concrete slab foundation instead of strip footing?

Hello! I hope you can help me! We are building a single-family house with a garage and no basement, doing a lot of the work ourselves. There is a geological survey of the construction access road (about 10m (33 feet) from our plot). The soil is soft clay, so our architect and structural engineer believe that a strip foundation with a slab on grade would not be stable. Instead, they recommend at least 50 cm (20 inches) of compacted gravel using a plate compactor, followed by a 30 cm (12 inches) thick concrete slab on top. I’m not feeling confident about this. What do you think? Can I rely on that? And what about the frost protection edge? How should I insulate it?

Thank you very much in advance!

Hi,
the issue with water must definitely be kept away from the house. Otherwise, you will run into problems with mold and so on. If this can be managed with just a drainage layer of gravel, then you should listen to the expert.

If the professional recommends this solution, I would follow that advice as well. After all, it's your first time building, but they have much more expertise in this area.

I would rely on what the architect and the structural engineer say. They probably know more about this than we do here, and they certainly don’t want anything bad to happen to you.

Yes, I agree with that. The architect and the structural engineer only want the best for you since they are being paid, so they should know what they are doing.
