I am currently considering which size to order for my attic ladder and am undecided between the standard 140x70 cm (55x28 inches) or the custom size 150x85 cm (59x33 inches). The attic will be used exclusively for storage. However, I think that the larger the hatch, the easier it is to carry things up there. What size do you have, and is it sufficient for your needs? Or do you think the extra 200-300 euros for a custom size are worth it?

We also have 140x70. Dealing with large boxes or similar items can be quite a hassle.
For an additional 200 to 300 euros, I would choose the larger one.

I also looked into this topic and found from many sources that a width of 80 is significantly more comfortable than 70. Accordingly, we are planning for a minimum width of 80 as well. Whether it is "good" or not, I might be able to report by the end of the year 🙂

What about the insulation? Is the floor hatch as effective as standard batt insulation?

When I asked, the energy consultant said it’s not that critical for the calculation since the area is so small. I’m just assuming that between 1.30 x 0.60 meters (4.3 x 2.0 feet) and 1.50 x 0.80 meters (4.9 x 2.6 feet), which is 0.78 m² (8.4 sq ft) and 1.20 m² (13.0 sq ft), there isn’t a huge difference.

For the calculation, maybe yes, since there are generally standard losses deducted anyway, including for recessed areas in the exterior walls for outdoor water taps and pipes, etc. But if you actually have a thermal bridge there, you might have a correspondingly bigger problem later on.

However, I have no idea whether a floor retractable ladder is much worse. So it wasn’t a rhetorical question but a genuine one.
