Hello everyone,

My grandma owns a house, and I want to set up a home studio in the attic. During wartime, a bomb hit the house. You can still see the damage in the attic. The floor is partly concrete and partly wooden boards. The wooden boards are from before the war.

Dusty attic with wooden plank floor, scattered debris, and a diagonal beam.
I have no experience with construction and am a complete beginner in this field.

I want to make sure the floor is safe and can support enough weight. I also want to insulate it to reduce sound transmission to the rooms below.

How can I check if the floor is safe? Should I hire a mason or bricklayer? I can’t assess this myself, and unfortunately, I don’t have parents or relatives who can help. My grandma is too old for this kind of work.

I hope someone can give me an initial assessment and advice on how to approach a project like this.

Thanks and best regards,

Hello again, it is not possible to make an assessment based on the photo. You would need more information. Look for a structural engineer or an engineering firm specializing in construction management or site supervision in your area, something along those lines. In my region, an initial consultation is free of charge!
