ᐅ Existing Attic Floor Plan

Hello everyone,

after quietly reading for some time, I am now hoping for your help.

Almost three years ago, we bought and renovated a bungalow from the 1970s (not an energy-efficient renovation). Since the ground floor now meets our needs, it is time to focus on the attic.

And this is where you come in.

The attic is basically already developed, but not in the way we imagine it.

We want one bathroom with a shower, one master bedroom, and one or two children’s rooms.

Unfortunately, I don’t have dimensioned plans; the exterior measurements were taken from the ground floor plan. The other data were measured by myself and therefore are probably not 100% accurate.

I am mainly looking for creative input and ideas for the room layout. I have attached my first draft/idea.

Important details:
- Concrete ceiling
- Roof pitch 35 degrees
- Two wooden beams and the chimney/vent are fixed and cannot be moved (marked in white)
- Windows as they are
- Wastewater outlet located to the left of the stairs in the exterior wall
- The white lines outside are meant to mark the 1 meter (3 ft 3 in) line, which will become the new knee wall
- The roof shape surprised us somewhat because where the white line for the knee wall is drawn, the large roof is actually recessed into the smaller roof on the inside, which in my opinion makes the smaller roof less usable

What do you think of my idea? Is it feasible or not? Will the rooms/functionality work out well?
Do you have suggestions for improvements or maybe a completely different idea?

I will only return here once there are pictures of the situation.

No, neither the north arrow, the roof pitch, nor the position of the upper windows are shown, otherwise it would be easier for me too.

Then you should add the north arrow. At 12:00 noon, the sun is exactly in the south. You can also look up your house on Google Maps or a geoportal, where north is usually at the top or indicated.

I didn’t know about the bedroom.

I thought so. 😉

I’m still not sure why the ground floor plan is necessary. The rooms are laid out as shown, so why is it important to know their exact dimensions?

The roof plan is based on the ground floor plan. The designer needs to know where any load-bearing walls are located and whether the loads can be supported there.

I have now attached the current layout with the corresponding internal dimensions. Even if I don’t understand why, for us, this is unusable.

Unfortunately, it is unusable for us as well. Please take a photo of the ground floor plan and mark any significant changes if applicable.

The roof pitch actually measures 40 degrees with a protractor. The 2-meter (6 ft 7 in) line was measured in relation to the window in practice; likewise, the current knee wall height in the bathroom is 1.10 m (3 ft 7 in), so the 1-meter (3 ft 3 in) line should also be roughly correct.

There is already a bathroom in the roof area?

Please use common measurement units when drawing. On construction sites, meters and centimeters are used (e.g., 1.25 m (4 ft 1 in)).

There are pictures, one post before his reply. In my opinion, photos of the interior are not necessary, and if they are, then I would rather not rely on help from the forum.

North is roughly on the right side of the house. (And yes, I know a children's room is ideally not facing north; the idea was to avoid having a bedroom directly next to the bathroom.)

The floor plan of the ground floor doesn’t reveal much more than my drawing. I’ve taken another photo now; the changes are based on my plan. Unfortunately, I really don’t have the time to provide more at the moment.

Currently, the bathroom is located to the left of the staircase, near the drain.

And yes, I’m aware of the measurement details, but the drawing was already there, and moving the decimal point is not difficult.

I know this probably isn’t meant negatively, but I believe this is heading in a direction I can’t afford. I originally just wanted to gather some ideas regarding the layout; for anything else, I would have looked for someone locally. If this is only possible with a “professional architect’s plan,” then unfortunately it’s probably not going to work out.

Why should I care about your furniture? Pictures of plans and drawings won’t help with your question. Finally go take photos of the miserable attic you want to convert and have yet to show a single image of. Instead, you keep repeating that drawing with the restricted areas, which can’t be understood without actually seeing the building in question.

What exactly would you like to have photographed?

The attic has already been converted, as I mentioned at the beginning—that means there are walls with paneling, wallpaper, carpet, a knee wall, a bathroom, and so on. (Currently, there aren’t many pieces of furniture, but there are moving boxes and similar items.) I have already uploaded a drawing showing how the rooms are currently arranged. So what exactly do you want to see in the photos?

Well, the restricted areas and the odd openings in them, the purlins, and so on.
