Hey,

maybe someone can help me out.

A one-and-a-half-story house with a gable roof and collar beam construction.

What does an attic floor look like? When I am in the attic, I see the beam structure, and from below (view from the upper floor), drywall panels are installed as the ceiling of the upper floor. So from above, I see the drywall panels, or is that a vapor barrier? Does this mean that in this situation, you can only walk by balancing on the beams? To make the attic floor walkable, is the space between simply left empty, or is it filled with something...? If it is filled, doesn’t that cause a weight problem that the drywall panels would have to support?

Thanks for shedding some light on this.

The construction you described does not seem practical to me, nor to anyone in real-life situations: a walkway will be covered with planks or tongue-and-groove boards; and insulation will most likely be installed in the top-floor ceiling. In the case of an attic storage space, it is more common to include the attic within the thermal envelope rather than to exclude it and effectively heat it. Love letters, Christmas decorations, and seasonal clothing don’t need to be kept warm.
