Hello everyone,

I am planning to install LED strips as backlighting in my Kallax shelves, but I definitely want to avoid drilling. The surface is fairly smooth and the shelves are made of engineered wood, so I am looking for a secure and gentle mounting solution that also leaves no residue in case I want to remove the lighting later.

Has anyone had experience attaching LED strips securely to Kallax or similar furniture without screws or drilling? Which methods or materials work best—adhesive tapes, special clips, magnetic solutions, or maybe something else entirely?

It is important that the mounting holds well over time and that the lights do not shift. Tips on surface preparation or recommendations for compatible LED strip models are also appreciated.

Looking forward to your suggestions!

For attaching LED strips to smooth surfaces like Kallax furniture without drilling, I recommend using high-quality double-sided tape, especially 3M VHB (Very High Bond). This tape can withstand strong loads and often leaves no residue if removed properly.

It is essential to thoroughly clean the surface beforehand with isopropanol to remove any dust or grease that could affect adhesion. Also, LED strips with factory-applied 3M adhesive on the back are often sufficient; you can reinforce the adhesive area by adding extra 3M tape.

Alternatively, there are special LED clip holders that clamp onto Kallax shelves without damaging the wood. These clips are sturdy but offer less flexibility in positioning compared to tape.

Magnet solutions are less practical because Kallax furniture does not contain metal, and you would need to attach strong magnetic strips, which can be visible or require additional adhesive.

Summary:
- 3M VHB double-sided tape (clean surface!)
- Reinforce factory-applied adhesive on LED strips if needed
- Clips as a mechanical alternative

These methods are the most reliable and keep the furniture undamaged.

Has anyone here experience with safely attaching LED strips to Kallax or similar furniture without screws or drilling?

Some time ago, I installed LED strips on my Kallax shelves, also without drilling. Here is my step-by-step approach:

1. Prepare the surface: Thoroughly clean the areas where you want to stick the strips using a lint-free cloth and a solvent such as isopropanol.

2. Check the LED strips: Many LED strips come with a self-adhesive backing, but this is often weaker than 3M adhesive tape. I applied a thin layer of double-sided 3M tape underneath to ensure better adhesion.

3. Mounting: Carefully position the LED strip and press firmly, especially at the ends.

4. Alternative clip holders: If you prefer a reusable option, you can use small transparent clips, which are available at craft stores or online. These clip onto the edges of the shelving without leaving residue.

5. Cable management: For a neat appearance, I recommend using flat adhesive cable channels, which can be easily removed later.

Common mistakes I’ve noticed:
- Not cleaning the surface, causing poor tape adhesion.
- Peeling off the entire adhesive backing of the LED strip at once instead of gradually, which can lead to misalignment.
- Using cheap adhesive tape, which tends to lose grip quickly.

In summary, using high-quality 3M tape and proper surface preparation makes drilling completely unnecessary.

Hey, I completely agree! The LED strips have held on my Kallax shelves perfectly with 3M tape for over a year now. 🙂

A little tip: Sometimes warming the tape slightly with a hairdryer for a few seconds before applying the strip helps – it makes the tape a bit more flexible and improves adhesion. 🙂

Don’t worry about residue if you ever remove the strip; 3M tape usually peels off quite easily. If there is any leftover adhesive, just use a bit of isopropanol to clean it, and your furniture will stay intact.

One thing though: with Kallax, be careful not to stick the tape onto any load-bearing beams, as over time this could peel off the finish. Just apply it on the inside or on smooth surfaces, and you’ll be fine! 😉
