ᐅ Securing a Carport with Ground Anchors – How to Align It?

Hello everyone!

I want to build a carport on our garden plot to store wood and provide weather protection for a wheelbarrow and similar items. It doesn’t need to have a particularly precise or strong foundation since no car will be parked on it. Because this is a leased plot, I’m not allowed to dig too deeply or lay gravel or anything similar. I will roughly level and compact the ground, then place the base plates directly on the grass/soil.

Since the ground won’t be completely even, I’m wondering how to align the ground anchors. These have to be screwed into the ground like large screws, but it seems unlikely you can keep them perfectly vertical over the full 90 cm (35 inches).

So my question is: what is the best way to align these so that the posts that go into them will have the correct spacing at the top, where the roof will be?

I would appreciate any tips you might have!

Drilling jig ... good tip. Apparently, there is a good one from Wolfcraft. Well, for the next project then.
One more question: if you secure the post next to the hex bolt that goes through the center additionally with shorter screws in the outer holes of the insert sleeve, do you necessarily need washers for that? The screw heads rest against the metal of the post bracket, so I would think it might work without them.

Another issue (freely adapted from Stephan Hentschel): how would you assess the stability of the connection between the joist hanger and the post? The joist hanger for screw-in sleeves is much shorter than an H-strap, as shown here:

Two vertical metal angle fasteners with screw holes

I have installed it so that the 110mm (4.3 inches) screw goes through the center, and additionally, I screwed in two 6cm (2.4 inches) long screws at the top and bottom holes (so two screws per side, staggered, meaning one bottom left, one top right, and the opposite arrangement on the other side). Is this setup stable enough, or should diagonal braces be added to support the posts?

The carport definitely needs to be braced against collapse in all directions by using angled supports in the construction. These are the small diagonal beams in the corners beneath the roof. The beam shoes should be considered as simple bearings that only carry vertical loads.

Yes, the angled beams on top are part of the carport. However, I think the post base for an H-beam with two holes aligned vertically is somewhat sturdier than the five holes on the screw-in sleeve... Maybe additionally screw diagonal braces to the posts at the bottom?

At the top, you have to; at the bottom, you can.

The carport kit did not include any diagonal braces. So I will make them myself. This raises the question about their placement. Can the braces be attached at position A or B, or does it have to be specifically at B? (see attachment)
