Hello everyone, I am planning to equip my Billy bookshelf from IKEA with LED lighting to improve visibility inside the shelves. My main question is: Is it possible to install a fixed electrical connection directly at the bookshelf to power the lighting permanently? If so, what would be the best way to do this without compromising stability or appearance? I have seen some LED kits that run on batteries, but I would prefer a permanent power supply, possibly with a switch. I look forward to your experiences and advice!
Oh yes, a small tip from me: If you plan to move or rearrange the shelf frequently, a plug connection between the power supply and the LED strip would be practical. That way, you don’t have to rewire everything 🙂
Cable ties, Velcro straps, or small clips help to keep the cables neatly secured.
This keeps your setup flexible, making it easier to make changes later on.

I really like how many tips have come together here. I had the exact same problem with the LEDs on my shelf not sticking well. Your question, Kelotu, resonates with me too—I simply applied some silicone adhesive under the LED strips, and it holds firmly without leaving much residue afterward.
I know it’s experimental and not ideal for everyone, but if you don’t want extra brackets, it can be a good alternative.
Otherwise, good luck with your project! 🙂

To conclude, here are some requirements regarding electrical safety during installation:
- All components used should be VDE-tested or CE-certified.
- Plug connections and power supplies must comply with the applicable standards.
- Installation of 230V (230V) systems should only be carried out by qualified professionals.
- When mounting LED strips indoors, moisture-resistant types are not strictly necessary; however, in areas with higher humidity, you should consider using IP44 or higher-rated products.
These points ensure a durable and safe installation.
