Hello everyone,

I would like to know how your KALLAX shelves hold up after several moves. Are your KALLAX shelves still straight, or do you notice over time—especially if they have been repeatedly disassembled, reassembled, and transported—that they warp or are no longer perfectly straight? I am particularly interested in experiences regarding stability and any long-term deformations caused by frequent handling. Thanks for your feedback!

After multiple moves and frequent assembly and disassembly, I recommend not underestimating the material of the KALLAX series: the combination of particleboard and melamine coating can be quite sensitive to mechanical stress.

In practice, I have noticed that especially the edges can easily warp if the panels are often loaded or assembled multiple times. This is often due to minimal shifts of the dowels and slight changes in moisture absorption.

Nevertheless, with careful handling and controlled transport, the deformation should remain minimal. For long-lasting straightness, a sturdy wall attachment is definitely recommended, especially for tall shelving units.

Hello Manma39,

I can understand your question well. I myself have moved several times in recent years and have disassembled and reassembled my KALLAX five times now. Each time, I take the time to check all the fittings and carefully transport the panels.

In my experience, the panels remain relatively dimensionally stable as long as they do not sag heavily or have been stored in a damp environment.

One tip: Before reassembling, carefully inspect all connection points. If you notice that the holes are somewhat worn out, you can make small repairs using wood glue and wood shavings, which significantly improve stability.

Only under heavy long-term load do minimal visible deformations occur, but this is quite rare.

Hey!

I can only say that after several moves, my KALLAX has become a bit "lived-in" — so it’s not perfectly straight anymore, but hey, that adds character! 😄

Jokes aside, I think with furniture that’s taken apart and reassembled multiple times, you can’t completely avoid some slight warping. In my case, there were mainly slight waves on the sides, but nothing that seriously affected function or appearance.

Of course, if you’re very picky, you might call it a bit “crooked,” but for the price and handling, it’s really quite acceptable 🙂

I can confirm that! After three moves, the shelves on my unit have slightly sagged, especially when they weren’t always transported carefully. You really have to handle the boards gently and avoid putting too much pressure on the sides.

Minor errors in assembly, especially with the dowels, do add up over time. But overall, the shelving unit still holds up very well considering all that wear and tear. 🙂

I find this question very important because there are often uncertainties when it comes to used KALLAX units, especially if you bought one without any remaining warranty.

After several moves, I noticed that the stability largely depends on how the furniture is transported and whether it is completely disassembled each time. In my experience, the risk of warping is greater if the furniture is transported fully assembled, as this can cause concentrated stress points.

It is also important not to overload the shelves, particularly the middle shelves, as this can affect their straightness over time.

How do you handle assembly and transportation?
