ᐅ Are there ways to reinforce or stabilize IKEA PLATSA furniture after assembly?

SanezelHello everyone,
Some time ago, I got an IKEA Platsa shelving unit as a storage solution. Although it is quite flexible and modular, I have experienced that it becomes somewhat wobbly under heavier loads or when moving it. Therefore, I am particularly interested in whether there are practical ways to reinforce IKEA Platsa furniture afterwards without completely compromising its modularity or significantly changing its appearance.
I am looking for proven tips or modifications that go beyond the standard assembly—perhaps additional screws, alternative fastening methods within the modules, reinforcements using other materials, or similar. The stability of the connections between the individual parts as well as the overall steadiness of the furniture are important to me.
Does anyone have experience or recommendations on how to make this piece more robust without completely disassembling or extensively altering it? I would appreciate any practical advice.

Hello,
the best way to stabilize PLATSA furniture is by adding metal brackets. Simply fasten them inside at the joints with screws. Reinforcing the back panels with MDF boards also helps prevent wobbling. Important: Make sure to anchor the furniture to the wall to prevent tipping over.

To supplement the previous response:
IKEA PLATSA is designed as a modular system and primarily uses connectors intended for quick assembly. While these are sufficient for normal loads, the joints tend to become less stable under heavier loads or frequent use.
The following measures have proven effective:
- Adding extra metal brackets or furniture connectors on the inside corners to reduce shear forces.
- Reinforcing the back panel with a particularly sturdy board, such as a thin plywood or MDF panel, to prevent sideways movement.
- Using wood glue in addition to the original connectors for a more durable bond.
- Installing adjustable feet to compensate for uneven floors and improve stability.
- If possible, using additional wall fastenings, especially for taller units.
These steps can usually be implemented afterwards, requiring moderate effort, and generally preserve the appearance. A complete disassembly and rebuild is rarely necessary.

At first, I was also worried that adding reinforcements might ruin the design, but I installed some sturdy brackets inside, and it made a big difference. The feeling of instability is much less noticeable.
If you use the furniture frequently, for example with children or as a wardrobe, it also helps to reinforce the shelves themselves. Not just the connections, but the individual boards can warp over time.
I know it’s a bit of effort, but it’s worth it to be able to use the piece longer and more securely. And if you’re careful during the process, it can still look good.
