I recently assembled an IKEA Pax wardrobe and noticed that the back panel is quite thin and doesn’t seem very sturdy. My question is: Are there proven ways to reinforce the back panel of a Pax wardrobe to improve its stability and load-bearing capacity without having to replace the entire back panel? I’m especially interested in practical solutions that can be implemented with reasonable effort, such as additional components, reinforcement strips, or specific mounting methods. It would be great to hear about experiences with materials, tools, or tips to prevent sagging or warping. - First, it is important to attach the back panel flush and straight all around to the cabinet frame.
- You can add extra cross battens or brackets made of wood or metal on the inside of the cabinet, screwed to the back panel. These reinforce the panel surface and prevent sagging.
- Another method is to replace the thin original back panel with a thicker plywood or multiplex board (possibly with cutouts for the back panel returns) and screw or glue it to the cabinet frame.
- It is also important to secure the base and top of the cabinet. Additional metal brackets or connectors there can ensure there are no instabilities.

- Buy 4-5 wooden battens (spruce or pine) matching the length and depth of your Pax wardrobe.
- Screw them vertically and horizontally in a rectangular frame on the inside of the back panel.
- Make sure the battens support the corners.

This is simple, effectively stabilizes the structure, and takes little time.

Good point. If the Pax wardrobe is placed directly against the wall and mounted there, the wall already provides a lot of stability. In this case, it is often sufficient to properly align and securely screw in the original thin back panel.

However, if the wardrobe stands freely, it is essential to use profiled reinforcements. For a practical reinforcement, a combination such as the following is recommended:
