Hello everyone,

I am considering fitting my IKEA Platsa shelving unit with casters to make it more flexible and easier to move around the room. My specific question is: Are there any options or proven methods to equip IKEA Platsa shelves with casters without compromising stability or significantly altering the assembly? I am especially interested in versions with swivel casters that are both sturdy and integrate well into the existing shelving structure.

If anyone has experience or recommendations, I would be very grateful for advice on suitable types of casters, necessary modifications to the shelving unit, or alternative solutions. Thanks in advance!

Hello, yes, that is possible. Simply buy suitable furniture casters with mounting plates and attach them to the bottom of the cabinet. It is important that the casters are strong enough to support the load.

Hey, I put my PLATSA shelf on castors myself – it worked great! Simply screwed sturdy castors (preferably with brakes) to the bottom panels, and now the shelf rolls around easily. Fits perfectly and even looks pretty good 😉.

Thanks for the tip. I’m also curious whether this affects the load capacity. Is the standard cabinet assembly sufficient, or should reinforcements be considered? Especially for taller shelving units. Anyone have an assessment on this?

The stability of a PLATSA shelving unit on casters depends heavily on the type of casters and their mounting. Generally, I recommend:

- Choose casters with a load capacity of at least 30 kg (66 lbs) per caster.
- Use casters with mounting plates that provide at least four screw points.
- Reinforce the frame with additional support using wooden strips or metal brackets.
- For tall shelves, it is advisable to add a back panel reinforcement to prevent tipping.

This way, you ensure that mobility does not come at the expense of stability.

A brief practical note: If the PLATSA shelving unit is placed on casters, it is important to choose casters with a locking brake. This is especially important for taller and heavier shelving units to prevent unwanted rolling, particularly on smooth floors.

Additionally, I recommend carefully planning the position of the casters before assembly – not too close to the corners to reduce leverage and maintain stability.
