Hello everyone,
I am currently planning to customize my IKEA Platsa wardrobe, especially the doors with handles. Are there any ways to alter or enhance the Platsa doors with handles so that they stand out visually from the standard version? I’m not just talking about replacing the handles themselves, but also about creative modifications—maybe some painting, decals, different materials, or using special handle designs that can be easily installed. What are your experiences with customization options for Platsa doors? I would appreciate any tips, practical advice, or DIY guides!

Otherwise, many users have started using adhesive films or magnetic paint to modify the doors. For painting, it is best to use acrylic paint followed by a clear varnish for protection; this ensures long-lasting results.

I also used old vintage buttons as handles on my PLATSA doors, which gives a really unique look and is inexpensive. Just use the holes from the old handles to attach the new ones. If you’re looking for creative handles: wooden beads or leather straps as handles are also cool and quite easy to install.
I felt the same way; I wanted something that didn’t just look like everyone else’s. I covered my PLATSA doors with a frosted film and then installed new handles from a hardware supplier. The surface now feels much higher quality, and the film also protects against scratches.
What was important to me was that the modification had to be reversible – so I didn’t want to glue or drill anything permanently that could damage the cabinet. That’s why I also tried to choose handles that fit the existing holes. If anyone is unsure: measure the handle hole distances in advance, it will save you trouble when buying.

Are there any ways to modify or customize the PLATSA doors with handles to make them visually stand out more from the standard look?Hello Parepo,
I had similar questions and can share a few practical tips:
- Changing the handles is the easiest option; many IKEA handles fit or can be easily adapted. There are also universal handles available at hardware stores that can be mounted using standard drilling holes.
- For the surface: vinyl films and paints work well. If you enjoy DIY projects, special furniture stickers for plastic doors are also recommended—they are easy to apply and can be removed without leaving residue.
- If you have some craftsmanship skills, try attaching narrow wooden strips as a frame on the door fronts. This gives a high-quality appearance and changes the look significantly.
- When painting with acrylic or chalk paint: make sure to sand edges and clean thoroughly; otherwise, the paint won’t adhere properly.
- If you want to make handles yourself: leather straps attached with two screws work great, especially for minimalist styles.
If you have any more questions, feel free to ask—I’m happy to help.
