Hello everyone,

I am currently exploring whether there are UV-resistant adhesive films specifically suitable for use on IKEA KALLAX shelves.

I plan to cover some of my shelves with films, but they are often placed near windows or in rooms with direct sunlight. Therefore, it is important to me that the film does not fade or become brittle after extended exposure.

Does anyone know of special adhesive films designed for KALLAX or particularly well-suited due to their properties? Which brands or types would you recommend?

A strong adhesion to the melamine surface that KALLAX has and an application with as few bubbles as possible are also important to me. Thanks for sharing your experiences!

The adhesive strength on melamine surfaces during temperature fluctuations is also crucial

That’s true, it’s an important point. Manufacturers usually provide technical data sheets that specify adhesion on different substrates.

The types of films I mentioned (Orafol Oracal 631/751, 3M Scotchcal) specifically have good adhesion on smooth, slightly glossy surfaces such as painted or melamine-coated furniture.

Long-term outdoor tests often show a durability of 5-7 years of UV protection, which corresponds with user reports from various forums.

So for KALLAX, this is certainly a realistic option.

That’s great to hear that the films are so durable! 🙂

About a year ago, I covered my KALLAX shelf with 3M Scotchcal film, even near windows. My tip: Make sure to apply it very carefully and prepare the surface thoroughly – as already mentioned.

Now, after a year, everything still looks like new, even with direct sunlight!

That’s really encouraging; I hope you find exactly the right solution for your project!

As far as I know, there are no films developed specifically for KALLAX available on the market.

However, the melamine surface of KALLAX is comparable to other plastic-coated surfaces, so standard UV-resistant outdoor films designed for furniture or similar surfaces are the best option.

There are many brands offering films with varying strengths of UV protection and adhesive systems. It is important to check the product specifications before purchase and ideally test with samples applied to evaluate adhesion and appearance, as color and finish variations should also be taken into account.
