Hello everyone,

I have been using the Ikea Besta drawers for a while and plan to store mainly heavier items like books or electronics in them. I have noticed that the drawers sometimes reach their limits under heavier loads, especially the slides and runners, which don’t seem ideally designed for higher weights.

So I would like to ask specifically: Are there any aftermarket upgrades or reinforcements for the Besta drawers that can significantly increase their maximum load capacity? For example, stronger drawer slides, alternative runners, or special accessories that are compatible and recommended? I am also interested in DIY solutions or any official additions from Ikea.

This is important to me because I want to improve the stability without having to buy new furniture completely. Who has experience or knows of suitable products?

Thanks in advance!

This is a very valid and technically interesting question. Basically, the BESTA series from Ikea is designed for moderate loads within the home, such as media equipment, moderate book collections, or dishes. The standard drawer slides are often metal ball-bearing types and can typically support between 10 and 15 kg (22 to 33 lbs) of load.

There are no official upgrades within Ikea’s product range since the system is designed as a whole. However, for higher loads, it is possible to retrofit heavy-duty drawer slides from furniture hardware suppliers, such as full-extension slides with soft-close features that have a minimum load capacity of 30 kg (66 lbs). These usually require modifications to the drawer side panels and cabinet side walls, as well as careful craftsmanship during installation.

Another aspect is the stability of the side and back panels of the cabinet itself. Reinforcing these with metal or wood support brackets or cross braces can help stiffen the overall structure.

If you want to dive into the detailed planning, it would be helpful to know
- the specific load (in kg) you are aiming for
- your level of DIY skill
- and whether you intend to replace all existing slides or keep the original ones

Then I could provide step-by-step advice on how to proceed and which replacement parts or profiles are worth considering.

Additionally, reinforcements from a hardware store, such as metal angle brackets for the drawer front and back, are usually an inexpensive and effective method. It is important only to ensure that no moving parts are obstructed and that the drawer’s function remains intact.

That sums it up well. In my experience, the original Ikea BESTA drawers have consistently handled loads in the 12–15 kg (26–33 lbs) range without any noticeable issues. For heavier loads, I recommend switching to heavy-duty slides from furniture hardware suppliers—they can be a bit pricey but are much more robust.

It’s also important to check whether the new slides can be mounted on the side without having to completely rebuild the drawer. Often, installation is limited by the narrow width of the BESTA drawer sides.

As a quick fix for slides that feel stiff or sticky, you can lubricate the existing rails with silicone oil.

I find this question interesting because many users often subject IKEA furniture to heavier use than expected. One point to consider is that high loads can not only overload the drawer slides but also affect the core material of the drawer fronts and sides.

Some DIY solutions therefore use not only stronger metal slides but also combine these with additional wooden or metal braces attached to the inside of the drawer. It is important to pay close attention to compatibility and installation depth since BESTA units are relatively shallow.

Since IKEA does not offer official upgrade parts for this series, compatibility usually relies on custom modifications and precise measurements. I recommend determining the exact dimensions and load requirements before any modification to avoid unnecessary wrong purchases or rework.

Finally, a counterquestion: Do you want to replace only the slides or also reinforce the drawer construction?

This can greatly influence the available solutions and the effort involved.

Hey, I just wanted to encourage you not to hesitate to take matters into your own hands! With a bit of patience and the right tools, the BESTA drawers can be greatly improved.

What I did:
- Ordered new full-extension drawer slides with higher load capacity (approx. 30–40 kg (66–88 lbs))
- Installed side reinforcements made from aluminum profiles
- Added a thin plywood base under the drawer bottom to prevent sagging

Now my drawers easily hold heavy electronics and thick file folders.

Don’t be discouraged by the standard specifications—many of us can successfully make these upgrades and save a lot of money! 🙂
