Hello everyone,

I am interested in upcycling ideas specifically for older Ikea Hemnes models. Some of my Hemnes furniture pieces are several years old, and I want to avoid simply discarding them or just restoring them in a basic way. Are there creative suggestions on how to repurpose or visually refresh these classic pieces without losing their typical construction or material quality? It is especially important to me that the ideas are practical, meaning they can be carried out with some DIY skills and are affordable.

I am curious about your experiences with particular techniques, materials, or design approaches that work well with the older Hemnes furniture. For example, how to improve common weak points or whether certain color schemes and surface treatments are recommended without completely changing the style.

Thanks in advance for your feedback!

Hello Bukupra,

First of all, a very well-written and thoughtful introduction! Your question is quite precise, which makes it easy to address. The older Ikea Hemnes models usually consist of solid pine wood or sometimes MDF elements with a veneer finish, which naturally affects how they can be worked on.

In upcycling projects like this, I have had particularly good experiences with the following approach:

- Removing old paint layers with suitable, gentle products. Make sure to pay attention to the type of wood, as pine is quite soft and can be damaged by aggressive agents.
- Repainting with chalk paint or natural resin varnish, as these product types adhere well and create a matte, contemporary look that often complements the vintage style.
- To reinforce common weak points, I have, for example, replaced the hinges with higher-quality, sometimes even adjustable models – this adds more convenience.
- For damaged or heavily worn shelves, consider using thicker plywood panels as a base and then repainting them accordingly.

Do you mainly have dressers, nightstands, or wardrobes? The type of furniture significantly affects the options, as fronts on dressers are easier to replace or spruce up than those on large wardrobe units.

Overall, upcycling these models is worthwhile because the wood material itself is usually of good quality – no cheap particleboard is used here. This offers a wide range of possibilities for surface treatment and modifications.

If you like, I can also provide step-by-step instructions on how to restore the surfaces or modify the doors.

Hey everyone!

I find this topic really exciting, especially because Hemnes is often underestimated when it comes to upcycling. Some time ago, I converted a few of my old Hemnes dressers into stylish bar carts – it works great and looks very cool!

Just add casters, place a mat in the top compartment, and attach small hooks for glasses on the inside of the doors. For a more unique look, you can apply colorful adhesive films with interesting patterns on the surfaces without having to sand or repaint extensively.

I can only agree—simple paint really changes everything and brings new life to the furniture. I like it when upcycling isn’t too complicated and preserves the character of the piece. For those who like to experiment, you can also mount old furniture parts as wall shelves or turn drawers into cool storage boxes.

A quick question for Bukupra: Which rooms are you planning to brighten up with your Hemnes furniture? That might help to think more specifically.

Simply unscrew the fronts, sand them down, and repaint or stain. Attach casters, and you have a mobile sideboard. Alternatively, hang the drawers on the wall as small shelves. All straightforward and effective.
