Good morning everyone,

I have a Billy bookshelf from Ikea in my apartment, and I’ve noticed that the doors, especially when moved frequently, tend to be quite noisy and sometimes a bit stiff. I’m very interested to know if anyone has tips or proven methods to make the door movements on the Billy as quiet and smooth as possible.

I’m thinking about possible adjustments to the hinges, lubricants, or other technical tricks. Maybe there are specific replacement parts for the doors that could improve opening and closing.

I would appreciate any helpful advice, especially if it can be done without major modifications. Thanks in advance!

Great to see so many tips here! 🙂

For an even easier solution: rubber bumpers on the inside of the doors help cushion the impact. Quiet and inexpensive. Plus, a bit of softness when closing! 🙂

Briefly from my experience: clean the door hinges, then apply silicone spray or graphite lubricant. Adjust the hinge screws afterward. This usually is enough to make the doors operate more quietly again.

One more tip: When installing new hinges or dampers, pay attention to the spacing to ensure the door doesn’t stick. Especially with Billy, every millimeter (0.04 inches) counts.

Exactly! I would even recommend measuring carefully with a ruler or a gauge before drilling. Anyone who is not precise here can easily end up with more problems than before.
