KINLE66Hello everyone,
I own several IKEA Hemnes furniture pieces, mostly dressers and nightstands, which I really like. However, I’m currently struggling with stubborn stains on the surface that don’t come off easily despite regular cleaning. These are mainly dark, sometimes dried-in stains, probably from cosmetics or drinks.
My question to the community: Are there any proven tips for gentle and effective cleaning of IKEA Hemnes furniture when dealing with such stubborn stains? I definitely want to avoid damaging the surface with harsh products or harming the veneer.
Who has experience with special cleaning products or home remedies, and what methods have you found to be sustainable and gentle on the material?
I would appreciate any feedback, preferably with a brief explanation of the cleaning steps you followed.
Thank you in advance!

Regarding your issue with stubborn stains on IKEA Hemnes furniture—I completely understand your caution. The surfaces of the Hemnes series are usually painted or have a thin protective coating, so harsh cleaning products should be avoided as they might damage the protective layer.
Here are a few tips that have worked well on my furniture:
- Use warm water with a few drops of a neutral dish soap, applied with a soft cloth.
- For stubborn stains, you can lightly dampen the cloth with diluted vinegar (about 1:10 with water). Vinegar helps remove limescale and breaks down some organic residues.
- Avoid abrasive cleaners, strong chemicals, or highly alkaline cleaners, as they may dull the surface.
- After cleaning, always wipe the surface with a dry cloth to prevent water spots.
If you’re unsure, I recommend testing the cleaning method first on an inconspicuous area. Feel free to describe the type of stain here in more detail, and we can offer more targeted advice.
I hope this helps!

Are there any proven tips for gentle and effective cleaning of IKEA Hemnes furniture when dealing with stubborn stains? For reference: Hemnes furniture is made of solid pine with a lacquered surface finish. Cleaning should therefore be done carefully to avoid damaging the lacquer.
Specific recommendations:
- Use warm water and a pH-neutral cleaning agent.
- Preferably use a sponge or soft cloth; avoid stiff brushes.
- For stubborn stains, isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) in a low concentration can be applied with a soft cloth. It is important not to rub too hard.
- After cleaning, always wipe thoroughly with water and dry the surface.
- For stains caused by dyes or oils, a specialized furniture cleaner for lacquered wood surfaces may help.
Harsh household cleaners, solvents, or abrasive agents are not suitable and may damage the lacquer.
This procedure is based on manufacturer recommendations for lacquered solid wood furniture.

Use a soft cloth, no abrasive cleaners.I can only confirm this. I once had dark marks from a pen holder on my Hemnes desk, which I could only remove with gentler methods to avoid damaging the surface.
I tried a mixture of lukewarm water and a little dish soap, then gently wiped for several minutes with a microfiber cloth. Apply as little pressure as possible to avoid harming the finish.
If that’s not enough, here’s another tip: you can very gently rub off sticker residue or stains with a white, color-free eraser. Be sure to press lightly and check frequently to make sure no scratches occur.
I know how frustrating stains can be, especially when you want to take good care of the furniture. A bit of patience usually helps.

Isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) should be used in a low concentration and applied with a soft cloth.I can confirm this. I had very stubborn stains on one of my Hemnes dressers that neither dish soap nor vinegar could remove. Using a cloth dampened with isopropyl alcohol and gently rubbing in circular motions worked well, without damaging the finish.
It is important not to use the alcohol undiluted and never apply it directly onto the furniture. Always wipe immediately afterwards with a damp cloth to remove any residue.
In general, I think kitchen remedies are often a good first choice for Hemnes furniture, but for especially tough stains, technical cleaners like isopropyl alcohol can be really helpful.
