Hello everyone, I have an issue with my IKEA Hemnes furniture. I noticed that the drawers and doors are quite noisy when opening and closing, which can be especially disturbing during quiet moments or at night. Are there any proven techniques, materials, or tricks to make Hemnes furniture quieter? I’m not only thinking about rubber or felt strips but also potential modifications to the furniture itself or special lubricants for the sliding mechanisms. I’m looking forward to your experiences and recommendations, as I really appreciate the furniture but would like to reduce the noise.

Hey Tese66, I feel the same way about my Hemnes pieces! 😊 First, I put soft felt pads on the contact points of the doors – this helps a lot to cushion the impact and reduce noise. Also, you can easily oil the hinges, preferably with a special silicone oil, as it doesn’t attract dust. Another tip: for the drawers, I glued small rubber pads under the runners, so they slide much more smoothly and don’t squeak anymore. Give that a try, it’s definitely worth it! Keep it up, you’ll get it! 👍

What interests me, however, is how long the effect of such measures really lasts. Felt strips and lubricants can wear out or get dirty. I also wonder if sometimes the material or construction of Hemnes furniture itself is the cause of the noise. Perhaps it would be more effective to specifically use alternative installation or modification components, such as different drawer runners or special dampers for doors. Have you ever tested how the long-term behavior changes? I doubt that simple felt pads alone are a lasting solution.

I agree with you, faso31, short-term solutions are often just a starting point. Here is a more structured approach to reduce noise in IKEA Hemnes furniture:

- First, check that all screws and fittings are tight; loose parts often cause noise.
- Use felt or rubber pads on contact surfaces, especially on doors and drawers, to reduce impact noise.
- Lubricants: Avoid traditional oils that attract dust. Instead, use silicone sprays or PTFE-based products.
- As an upgrade: If possible, replace the original drawer runners with high-quality, soft-closing rails.
- Inspect the assembly: Even a slightly misaligned piece of furniture can bind and produce squeaking sounds.

A combination of several measures usually achieves the best result. Tip: Try simple steps first before moving on to more complex modifications.

Lightly lubricate door hinges, use felt pads at the strike points, and plastic glides for drawers. Done.

That’s an interesting point, faso31. I didn’t look into the hardware details when I purchased it and relied on the original parts. Upgrading to higher-quality slides or dampers would probably be the way to go if felt pads and lubricants aren’t enough. Which specific dampers are you referring to? Are there compatible options for Hemnes, or more generic ones that can be installed? The effort should of course be reasonable—I don’t want to have to completely rebuild the piece.

Also, I’ll take up Guyjus’ suggestion and check the fastenings, another good tip. Thanks for that!
