ixlejeHello everyone,
I am currently exploring sustainable furnishing ideas and came across the topic of upcycling Ikea furniture—specifically the Hemnes series. Since these pieces are very common and often available secondhand, I am wondering if there are already sustainable projects dedicated to upcycling Ikea Hemnes furniture.
I am especially interested in whether there are ideas or detailed guides on how to creatively transform these pieces to give them a second life, instead of simply disposing of them or buying new ones.
Does anyone here have experience or tips for such upcycling projects with Ikea Hemnes? What works well, and what doesn’t? I look forward to an engaging discussion!

Hello ixleje,
I think your question is very well chosen because the HEMNES series, thanks to its solid wood quality, is ideal for upcycling. Here are a few considerations that might help you:
- Preparation: Always sand thoroughly to prepare the surface for a new finish. Common mistakes are sanding too coarsely or too finely, which can cause problems later with painting or staining.
- Color choice: Eco-friendly paints or varnishes are recommended as they make the piece sustainable and durable. Avoid harsh solvents.
- Creative redesign: Many options are possible, from simple painting to decoupage techniques, and even more complex modifications like installing new fronts or panels.
- Extensions: You can add shelves or combine with LED strips to enhance functionality and design.
In summary, the HEMNES series is easy to work with, sturdy, and especially suitable for personalized modifications. If you like, I can provide more practical tips or step-by-step guides.

What a great topic! 🙂 I upcycled a HEMNES dresser myself, and it was so much fun! For me, it was important not only to improve the look of the piece but also to keep it sustainable.
I can definitely agree with that! Afterward, I used chalk paint sealed with beeswax – it feels great and is very eco-friendly.
I also replaced the handles with old furniture knobs from a flea market – this gives the piece a truly unique charm.
I hope this inspires even more people to redesign old furniture and save resources at the same time! Upcycling rocks! 🙂
