Hello everyone,
I’m currently exploring whether there are sustainable methods to care for IKEA Hemnes furniture safely and in an eco-friendly way. Especially with solid wood furniture like the Hemnes series, the question arises how to best protect the surfaces without relying on chemical-based care products that might provide a short-term shine but can harm the material and the environment in the long run.
I’m particularly interested in:
- Which natural or DIY care products have proven effective?
- Are there special techniques to consider during cleaning or treatment to enhance the furniture’s durability?
- How often should care be applied without over-treating or drying out the surfaces?
It is important to me that the methods are not only sustainable but also practical for everyday use. I’m looking forward to your experiences and tips!

Exactly, people over-care for their furniture and end up damaging the natural protective layer or increasing the risk of staining – and then they wonder why. To me, sustainability also means not overdoing it and, above all, understanding the material.
For IKEA Hemnes furniture with lacquer-sealed wood, regular gentle dusting with a cloth is enough to protect the lacquer.
Anyone who thinks they need to treat the wood with some kind of substance-altering product should reconsider the surface fundamentally. Sometimes less is more.
And by the way: HEMNES is basically not a luxury wood furniture line, so you shouldn’t expect too much in terms of durability and maintenance.

Summary on Sustainable Care for IKEA HEMNES Furniture:
- Since most HEMNES models are lacquered, oil-based treatments are often not suitable. They can become sticky on the sealed surface or cause stains.
- For regular cleaning, it is recommended to:
- Remove dust with a dry, soft cloth
- Use a slightly damp cloth with mild castile soap or gentle soap for dirt
- Wipe immediately with a dry cloth to prevent moisture damage
- For occasional maintenance:
- Use water-based furniture waxes specifically designed for lacquered surfaces
- Avoid solvents and harsh cleaners
- Frequency:
- Clean monthly or according to usage
- Apply furniture wax 1-2 times per year
Mistakes such as over-oiling, cleaning with too much moisture, or using incorrect cleaners shorten the furniture’s lifespan and reduce its aesthetic value.
Conclusion: Sustainability also means choosing the right method for the material and not using products out of habit that cause more harm than good.
