Hello everyone, I have been exploring the topic of sustainability for some time now, especially in the area of furniture care. I am particularly interested in whether there are sustainable care products specifically designed for the IKEA Hemnes series. These pieces are mostly made of wood, and I want to avoid using harsh chemicals or products with a poor environmental profile.

Does anyone know of care products suitable for the Hemnes series that are also environmentally friendly? I am thinking of oils, waxes, or special cleaning agents that not only protect the wood but are also made from sustainable or natural ingredients. The composition and compatibility with the material are important to me, as well as good durability and reasonable coverage.

I look forward to your experiences or recommendations—also any tips on what to avoid using.

I can understand how frustrating it can be to find the right care product when you prioritize sustainability.

Some time ago, I searched myself for sustainable care products for my wooden furniture. The most difficult part is often that many good products are either too harsh for the wood or don’t meet sustainability standards. I now use pure organic coconut oil, which absorbs well and protects the surface. However, it takes some time for the wood to build up its full protective layer.

If you’re concerned about the smell or greasiness: at first, I also felt uncertain, but over time, the wood simply became more resilient. Maybe this can be a good starting point for you. I’m also currently testing a beeswax-based polish that is very natural, but I’m still evaluating how much it changes the typical Hemnes finish.

The hope is that by choosing sustainable products, not only will the furniture’s lifespan be extended, but the environment benefits as well.

Maybe others here have better tips—I’m definitely staying on it.

To the point: IKEA Hemnes furniture is usually coated with a clear lacquer that provides some resistance to moisture and stains. This means that particularly aggressive oils or waxes, which are common in wood care, could damage or alter the lacquer layer.

Recommendation:
- Use cleaning products specifically formulated for painted or sealed surfaces.
- Products with eco-labels, such as Blue Angel, are often reliable in terms of sustainability.
- Since the furniture is already sealed, a mild cleaning with a biodegradable wood cleaner is often sufficient.
- For long-term protection, you can apply plant-based waxes or oils only to unsealed edges or areas.

Important: Avoid products containing silicone, paraffins, or solvents. These often cause more harm than good.

In short: Sustainable care products do exist, but they must be suitable for the surface treatment of Hemnes furniture. An amorphous oil treatment is not recommended for lacquered wood.

A very interesting topic, also from a technical perspective.

Exactly, the surface typically has a melamine or polyurethane coating. This protects the wood itself well, but you should be careful to use products that do not damage this layer.

Regarding sustainability: I recommend using natural, solvent-free cleaners with a pH-neutral formula. Some manufacturers specializing in furniture care offer certified products containing ingredients like linseed oil or carnauba wax, which are suitable for sealed surfaces.

For application: Before each treatment, you should test whether the product negatively affects the lacquer or surface color.

Question for the thread starter: Are there specific requirements? For example, allergy-friendly, vegan, or particular certifications?

Environmental standards for packaging and supply chain are also important—not just the product itself. Sustainability begins where factors like production and transportation are considered.

I am very curious if others can share their experiences, especially regarding the effects on Hemnes furniture after long-term use.

You can use simple natural soap for cleaning.

For maintenance, beeswax products are suitable if the surface is not fully sealed. Otherwise, it is better to use only mild cleaning products.
