Hello everyone, I am currently working on optimizing my storage solutions for small items in my Ikea Hemnes cabinets. Specifically, I am looking for proven methods or products that work well to keep order in the often quite large but shallow drawers of the Hemnes series. The challenge for me is that the drawers have a large surface area but shallow depth and no fixed dividers. Does anyone have experience with useful organizational aids designed specifically for Ikea Hemnes small items? I am interested in both DIY solutions and commercially available inserts, boxes, or other accessories that can be seamlessly integrated without unnecessarily reducing the storage space. Thank you in advance for your tips and suggestions!

Hello UMITUS, I’m very familiar with this issue because the HEMNES drawers are actually great for storage but often look messy without dividers. For small parts, I’ve had good results with:

- IKEA VARIERA inserts, which are specially made for drawers and often come in various sizes. They are quite shallow and can be combined.
- Custom-cut acrylic or wooden dividers, tailored precisely to the interior dimensions to optimize the space layout.
- Modular plastic boxes that you can place inside and remove as needed.

However, you should be careful that these solutions aren’t too tall, otherwise the drawers won’t close properly. Some users also combine magnetic small parts containers or small screw-top jars that can be mounted on the inside walls. If you want, I can provide measurements or sources. Hope this helps for now!

IKEA VARIERA inserts, specifically designed for drawers

The VARIERA inserts are actually one of the few IKEA solutions that can be used as dividers for HEMNES drawers. However, it is important to measure the drawer dimensions precisely, as the HEMNES series can have varying interior heights and depths depending on the model.

For small items, I recommend:

- Telescopic drawer inserts with adjustable dividers (these can be purchased separately at hardware stores or furniture retailers)
- Use of shallow plastic sorting trays with multiple compartments
- Custom-made inserts from high-quality MDF or acrylic

In addition, solutions like hard plastic boxes with built-in handles are advantageous because they are easy to remove and reorganize.

It is crucial to consider the maximum height of the drawer when buying ready-made inserts; otherwise, the functionality of the furniture may be compromised.

I personally use simple plastic boxes for small HEMNES parts, which I place loosely in the drawers. The important thing is the right height so that the drawer does not jam. Rubber or anti-slip mats at the bottom also help to prevent movement.

Alternatively, I recommend drawer organizers made of bamboo or wood, which are available in modular versions. These match well with the HEMNES furniture style and are durable.

If you want something more flexible, you can also use containers of different sizes and closure types to keep screws or small parts separated.

This actually works very well, especially when combined with so-called drawer inserts made of plastic or wood to secure the small boxes and prevent them from sliding around.

Telescopic drawer inserts with adjustable dividers

Such versatility is a real advantage, especially since the exact internal dimensions of HEMNES drawers can vary greatly. Overall, the best option is to use several modular boxes that can be combined and adapted in many ways.

One more tip: For very small parts, you can also use transparent screw-top containers placed inside the drawers – they are easy to access while keeping the appearance neat.
