Good evening everyone,

I have a question specifically about safety and stability regarding the popular IKEA BILLY bookcase. I am interested in whether there are specific materials, such as rubber mats, anti-slip pads, or other solutions, that can prevent a BILLY bookcase from tipping over.

Since BILLY bookcases are often relatively tall and narrow, I have concerns about tipping safety, especially when wall mounting is not possible or not desired.

Which products or measures do you know of that work specifically for BILLY bookcases—that is, options that stand out from standard shelf supports and actually provide a noticeable increase in tipping stability?

I look forward to your experiences and recommendations.

There are special non-slip mats made of rubber or silicone designed for furniture, which can be placed between the shelf board and the floor. They increase friction and reduce the risk of slipping.

However, they alone do not provide complete tip-over protection for BILLY. For real tipping safety, the shelf should be anchored to the wall.

This question is very relevant, as the tipping of shelves like the BILLY poses a real safety risk, especially in homes with children or when the floor is uneven.

In general, anti-slip mats increase grip on the floor, but they mainly prevent sliding rather than tipping. An effective measure against tipping, besides wall anchoring, is the use of so-called anti-tip brackets or furniture anchors, which are fixed at the top of the shelf and secured into the wall.

As a base, special non-slip pads made of neoprene or rubber are recommended; these can be layered to increase the coefficient of friction and compensate for small unevenness. However, these are more of a supplement than a standalone solution.

Anti-tip fittings, which IKEA sometimes offers or which can be found in hardware stores, are also worth considering. It is important, however, to ensure proper installation to guarantee maximum protection.

Do you already have a solution in mind, or is this a special room situation that makes wall anchoring impossible?

That is correct and the only truly secure method. If wall mounting is not possible, it is recommended to additionally use heavy anchors inside the shelf, for example by filling the lower compartments with heavy items.

Special pads alone do not replace mechanical securing, but they provide an important supplement by increasing friction. Pads that are resistant to compressive loads and unaffected by moisture or temperature should be preferred.

For sensitive floors, felt-like anti-slip pads are less suitable, as they may allow the shelf to shift.

That is correct, and I would like to add that IKEA itself offers such anti-tip devices specifically for the BILLY. These usually consist of sturdy straps that are screwed to the back of the shelving unit and then secured to the wall using anchors.

It is important to know that these devices provide the best protection when installed on solid floor and wall surfaces.

Regarding the use of underlays: non-slip mats help to some extent but do not replace wall mounting.

If wall mounting is not possible, the unit can also be stabilized, for example, by additional supports or pressure against the walls, combined with non-slip pads.

Another option is to install furniture brackets on the floor to secure the lower part.
