Hello everyone, I’m planning to set up some Billy shelves and want to make sure they are assembled securely and stably. Therefore, my question is: Are there any specific techniques or useful tips to mount Billy shelves particularly safely, especially when combining multiple units or attaching them to the wall? I have some experience with furniture assembly but want to ensure the shelves are stable, pose no tipping hazard, and that drilling or metal components are used optimally. I would appreciate any advice regarding spacing, screw techniques, or wall mounting.

That’s great that you want to be so thorough! 🙂 Here’s my approach: always assemble the shelf first, then mount it on the wall. For extra stability, I use high-quality metal anchors instead of standard wall plugs, and I don’t rely only on the small screws provided. I also recommend securing the shelves to the wall with special angle brackets at the top to prevent them from tipping over. If you plan to place several shelves side by side, it’s best to screw them together—that provides really strong support! It’s definitely worth spending a bit more time on this—the results look fantastic 😉 Good luck!

I basically agree with that, but the issue of the right kind of screwing should be considered more carefully. Not every screw connection is inherently appropriate. Especially with Billy-style shelves, screws that are too tight or too numerous can put the material under stress and cause damage.

In addition, the wall type is crucial: drywall requires different anchors than solid walls to hold securely. My recommendation would be to check the wall material before installation and, if necessary, use suitable anchors.

Could you possibly specify which types of walls you have, so the recommendations can be more precise?

Thanks for the advice! The shelves will be mounted on a solid interior concrete wall. As far as I know, that should be quite stable. However, I want to make sure I choose the right anchors and screws to ensure the shelf remains securely in place over the long term.

What exactly do you mean by metal anchors? Could you give a specific recommendation? So far, I only know the common plastic anchors and metal sleeves, but I would appreciate a clearer picture. Thanks!

For concrete walls, it is best to use impact anchors or heavy-duty anchors. They provide high load capacity and are easy to install.

When assembling the Billy shelves, make sure to tighten all connections securely and fully roll in the back panels – this greatly increases stability.

If several shelves are placed side by side, as already mentioned, screw them together. Simply use the appropriate screws on the inside of the sides.

Minimize tipping risk: Always fasten the shelves to the wall, even if they are not intended to hold heavy loads.
