Hello everyone,

I recently bought some MALM furniture from Ikea and noticed that the original screws look quite unusual in some cases. My question is a bit more specific: Are there special screws exclusively designed for MALM furniture, or are these ordinary screws that can also be easily found in any hardware store?

What’s especially important to me is whether these screws have specific dimensions, thread types, or material properties that make them unique. I’m planning to disassemble and reassemble the furniture and want to avoid using the wrong screws, as I’m concerned it could compromise the stability.

Does anyone have direct experience with the screws used for MALM furniture? Are there any official recommendations from Ikea, or even special replacement screws available for purchase? I would appreciate detailed information to be on the safe side.

Regarding the question of whether there are special screws for MALM furniture: Ikea generally does not use any unusual screws in this product line but primarily standard fasteners.

These usually consist of combinations of wood screws, cam locks, and dowels, chosen to work well with particleboard. The screws have different thread types, such as coarse or fine threads, to ensure optimal grip.

These factors are indeed important, but for MALM furniture, they conform to Ikea’s usual standards. Anyone needing replacement screws should pay particular attention to the exact size and appropriate thread; standard screws available at hardware stores with similar specifications are generally compatible.

Official Ikea recommendations usually advise obtaining replacement sets through customer service, where matching parts are grouped together.

In short: there are no "special" screws in terms of proprietary or hard-to-replace parts for MALM, but it is recommended to measure precisely if purchasing screws individually.

Well, that’s only partly true. Of course, Ikea doesn’t use completely unique screw technology, but the combination of cam locks and specific screws is designed so that the furniture is best assembled using the original parts.

I know several people who didn’t achieve the same stability or fit when using replacement screws from hardware stores because the threads or lengths differed slightly. That might seem insignificant at first, but it’s actually the crucial point.

Also, if you frequently disassemble and reassemble your furniture, keep in mind that Ikea screws are often not made for repeated use. The question is whether it might be better to use the original screw sets from Ikea to ensure long-term durability.

So, the question "Are there special screws for MALM furniture?" is more about fit than technology. Paying attention to this could make your life a lot easier.

In addition to the previous explanations:

The MALM system, like many Ikea furniture pieces, mainly uses cam lock fittings that work together with the appropriate screws and dowels. These do not necessarily have to be custom-made, but Ikea relies on a system that cannot be freely replaced.

This is an important point. Especially for furniture held together by “click mechanisms” or cam locks, experts also recommend using the original fasteners whenever possible.

A tip: If original screws are missing, replacement sets can often be ordered from Ikea, specifically designed for the respective piece of furniture. These are inexpensive and ensure the correct fit and stability.

In summary: There are no “irreplaceable special screws,” but substituting with similar, non-original parts requires technical knowledge and precise measuring.

Hello Prince40 and all other screw experts 🙂

I wanted to bring a bit of lightness to the screw discussion – without worrying about wood splitting or stability issues ;-)

I’ve personally assembled several MALM dressers and have even replaced screws before. What I noticed is this: Sure, the screws from IKEA aren’t high-tech, but they hold well. The “special screw” is actually more about the cam lock working together with the dowel – that’s what provides the strong hold.

If the original screws are missing or no longer look good, I’ve often found suitable replacements in small hardware store sets that work just as well. The important thing is that the size (length, diameter) fits and that the threads are appropriate for wood.

So, no need to panic ;-) I always say: with the right twist (pun intended! 😉) building and replacement screws work fine without special effort. So: just measure carefully and keep in mind that IKEA screws aren’t rocket science 🙂

Hello everyone,

I’d like to summarize everything a bit more systematically, especially since the discussion is quite spread out.

1. MALM furniture primarily uses screws that are not “special” in terms of being patented or unique, but are designed to fit the system. This mainly includes cam screws, wood screws, and dowels.

2. Compatible screws can often be found at hardware stores, but there is a higher risk that they won’t fit perfectly, which can negatively affect stability.

3. Ikea offers original replacement parts through their customer service. These are rarely expensive and ensure perfect fit and material quality.

4. For someone assembling furniture only once, using generic screws might be sufficient. However, if you plan to disassemble and reassemble frequently, original screws are recommended.

5. The weight of the furniture and the amount of stress it will endure play a role. For heavier or frequently used items, safety is more important.

Therefore, my recommendation: If you value safety and durability, original replacement screws are the best choice. For occasional repairs, compatible hardware store screws can work, but you should be very careful with dimensions and thread type.

Hope this helps everyone with their screw hopping :-)
