Hello everyone,

I recently purchased some furniture from Ikea’s Hemnes series. The pieces are made of solid pine, partly stained and lacquered, and I want to care for them properly to keep them looking good for a long time and to protect them from scratches, fading, or moisture damage.

My question is: Are there any specific care products that work especially well for Ikea Hemnes wood to optimally preserve its surface, color, and texture? I’m particularly interested in recommendations for gentle wood oils or lacquers that are not too harsh and help maintain the natural appearance without over-saturating or sealing the wood excessively.

I look forward to hearing your experiences and tips about which care products have proven effective or which ones should definitely be avoided.

Thanks in advance for your answers!

Hey tikama,

About a year ago, I also got Hemnes furniture and rely entirely on a good, natural wood oil that is specifically made for pine wood. 🙂

In my experience, a clear linseed oil or a wood balm blend works great to maintain the surface while nicely highlighting the grain. The most important thing is not to apply the product too thickly so the wood can still breathe.

If you prefer something low-maintenance, a wax finish also works well, though it mainly protects against superficial scratches. My tip: after cleaning with a mild wood cleaner, apply a thin coat of oil or wax; it absorbs well and preserves the warmth of the wood.

Enjoy your Hemnes furniture!

Regarding the question about special care products for Ikea Hemnes wood:

The Hemnes series is mainly made of solid pine wood, which is stained and lacquered. Consequently, traditional furniture oils that keep the wood open are less suitable, as the lacquer layer provides this protection.

For maintenance, a combination of regular cleaning with a slightly damp cloth without harsh cleaning agents and the use of a specialized furniture care product for lacquered surfaces is recommended.

Products that offer an additional protective layer in the form of furniture wax or polish can gently refresh the surface without damaging the lacquer.

Care products containing solvents or oils are not ideal for lacquered wood, as they can penetrate and damage the lacquer surface.

My advice: a furniture care spray or cream specifically designed for lacquered wood is the best choice to maintain shine and protection.

I fully agree and would like to add:

It is also important not to use oil-based products on untreated wood, since Ikea Hemnes furniture is usually lacquered. Oils or waxes can cause unsightly spots or glossy marks if the furniture is not completely unfinished.

A very good option is a wax-based furniture spray designed specifically for lacquered wooden furniture. It protects the surface, makes it water-repellent, and at the same time preserves the tactile feel of the wood grain.

If you prefer to treat the furniture in a completely natural way, you should primarily follow the correct cleaning method—avoid harsh detergents and excessive moisture.

After carefully reviewing the material properties: Ikea Hemnes furniture is coated with lacquer, which creates a sealed and protective surface. Therefore, there is no need to use oil or hard wax, as is common with untreated solid wood furniture.

I recommend the following approach:
- Regular wiping with a slightly damp microfiber cloth
- If needed, use a cleaning-friendly furniture care product designed for lacquered surfaces (without abrasives)
- Avoid harsh chemicals that could dissolve the lacquer

Specifically, furniture care products based on carnauba wax can be useful, as they build an additional protective layer and gently polish the surface without damaging the lacquer.

Be cautious with traditional wood oils or furniture waxes intended for untreated wood. These do not penetrate the lacquer and may leave unsightly residues.

That is correct; however, I would like to point out that not all lacquers have the same level of durability. Some users have reported that Hemnes furniture can be somewhat prone to light scratching.

Therefore, my question to the community is: Does anyone have experience with specific care products that genuinely strengthen the lacquer or have restorative effects without altering the natural wood appearance?

Additionally, I think it is important to discuss how useful it is to protect the furniture from UV exposure or whether there are recommended interior finishes that could be applied as supplementary treatment.

Are there any well-founded recommendations or insights on this topic?
