Are there spare parts for the IKEA Brimnes range that are especially difficult to obtain?

I recently looked for replacement parts for my Brimnes wardrobe, specifically the hinges and drawer slides. I noticed that IKEA itself doesn’t always have all spare parts readily in stock, and alternative sources online are usually quite limited as well. I’m curious whether this is an isolated case or if there are certain components within the Brimnes range that are generally harder to find compared to other IKEA furniture.

Additionally, I’d be interested to hear if experienced users have any tips on how to obtain particularly hard-to-find spare parts, or whether it’s usually worth the effort to replace individual components, or if buying a new unit is generally recommended.

The hinges on Brimnes are often problematic, especially the concealed ones. IKEA does not always have them in stock, so the only option is to reorder directly in the store or order online and wait. Other parts like screws or wood connectors are usually easy to obtain.

I can confirm that. In particular, the concealed metal hinges used on the door fronts of Brimnes are unfortunately hard to obtain. Often, these hinges cannot be ordered as individual parts from IKEA, as they are only available as part of new doors or complete units.

Technically, these hinges are custom-made—not necessarily a standard component. They have a specific installation position and feature built-in soft-closing mechanisms, which makes replacement considerably more difficult. The same applies to other components, such as the drawer slide rails: the Brimnes wardrobe uses relatively inexpensive rails, sometimes even coated with PVC, so spare parts are rarely available on the open market.

My tip: If you need spare parts, be sure to get the exact product or component number from IKEA and check availability directly with their customer service. Additionally, Brimnes includes a range of smaller fittings—for example, drawer guide rails or panel clips—that are often sold only in sets or not available individually.

Are there specific parts you want to replace? Then I could provide more detailed advice on the technical challenges.

That’s exactly my point: IKEA often uses special, proprietary components in their budget furniture, which unnecessarily complicates things if a part breaks.

I believe that when you buy this kind of furniture, you have to accept that replacement parts may not always be available or can only be obtained with significant effort.

And honestly – in my opinion, IKEA models like Brimnes are not really competitive when it comes to spare parts availability.

One might almost think it’s a tactic to encourage customers to consider buying a new model if something fails. What do you think? Isn’t that a pretty clever strategy by IKEA, hiding behind “affordability”?
