Hello everyone,

I have a question that might have been discussed before, but I couldn’t quickly find any concrete information: Are replacement parts available for older Ikea Malm furniture models?

I’m specifically referring to the Malm chest of drawers with six drawers, manufactured around 2008–2010. Some of the drawer slides are now sticking, and I would prefer not to dispose of the entire piece just because a few parts are worn out.

Since Ikea continuously releases new models, I wonder if original replacement parts are still available or if one has to rely on third-party suppliers or alternatives.

Does anyone have experience sourcing replacement parts for older Malm models? Where is the best place to look? Are there official sources, or is it mostly a matter of finding used parts or doing DIY repairs?

Looking forward to your tips and experiences!

For older Malm models, official replacement parts from Ikea are rarely available. It is best to inquire directly with Ikea, as they sometimes have leftover stock. Otherwise, check eBay or specialized furniture parts retailers.

That's exactly what I did, and I got lucky! 🙂 The item was not available at the Ikea near me, but over the phone, I was directed to a warehouse where I could order the rails I needed for my old Malm dresser! Really great, renovating like this is fun! :-)

Are there spare parts available for the older Ikea Malm furniture models?

I wonder if it even makes sense to rely on original spare parts for so-called "design classics" from Ikea. The furniture is quite simply constructed, and Ikea does not seem to prioritize spare parts service for older models.

Perhaps it’s more practical to look into universal alternatives or even consider replacing items with newer models.

Honestly, if Ikea focuses more on reselling rather than repair or durability, dealing with spare parts frustrations will likely be inevitable in the long run.

Of course, this is frustrating for those who want to be more sustainable. But Ikea is not doing itself any favors here.

Hello LEN31,

I can relate to your situation well, as I have an older Malm dresser myself, where the drawer slides started causing issues after a few years.

Regarding the availability of replacement parts: Official replacement parts for Malm models older than about 5 years are now rarely or no longer offered by Ikea. This is also due to logistical reasons. However, there are a few options:

1. Ikea clearance stock & customer service: Some stores or central warehouses occasionally have leftover stock. Politely asking Ikea customer service can sometimes help.

2. Online platforms: Websites like Ebay Classifieds or specialized furniture parts shops often offer used or refurbished Malm replacement parts. Patience is required here.

3. Universal drawer slides: There are high-quality drawer slides available at hardware stores or online retailers that can be installed as replacements if the original parts are no longer available. These are often of better material quality and very durable.

4. Use repair guides: Many DIY videos and blogs show how to get Malm dressers working again with simple tools.

I would recommend first contacting Ikea directly and simultaneously checking the used market options. If you are handy, universal slides are a very good alternative.

I hope this helps you!
