Hello everyone,

I have a somewhat specific question: Are there screw sets specifically available for the IKEA Kallax shelving system, especially in connection with moving? I’m not referring to regular replacement screws, but complete sets that might be designed for frequent disassembly and reassembly – screws, anchors, or connectors strong enough to allow the shelf to be taken apart and put back together multiple times without losing stability.

I recently moved and had to disassemble and reassemble my Kallax shelf several times. During this process, I lost a few screws and I’m not sure whether I should just use any standard screws or if there are already sets optimized for these situations.

Maybe someone here has experience with these screw sets or knows where to get them? Is something like this uncommon, or is it even recommended when moving?

Thanks for your tips!

Hey, thanks for sharing! I totally understand how annoying it is when the Kallax shelf isn’t as stable after a move or if screws go missing. I’ve had that experience myself when moving and just asked IKEA for replacement parts.

However, they usually only offer individual screws and connectors, not complete sets made specifically for moving. Personally, I would use standard wood screws and possibly special Kallax connector fittings that can withstand multiple assemblies and disassemblies.

It would be great if there was a complete set designed specifically for frequent assembly. Maybe there are suppliers outside of IKEA that offer something suitable?

Has anyone else had better experiences? I find this topic interesting because I’d also like to rearrange my shelf more often without constantly worrying about stability. 🙂

To put it plainly: IKEA does not actually offer special screw sets designed explicitly for multiple disassemblies. The furniture is intended for normal use and occasional rearranging, but not for frequent, repeated reassembly.

However, there are various manufacturers of furniture fasteners and screw sets that provide higher quality and durability than the original IKEA hardware. For example, specialty screws with coatings or made from stainless steel can be purchased from specialized retailers, which are better suited for repeated assembly.

The Kallax system typically uses cam locks and dowel connections for the carcass, which can wear out from overuse. In practice, it is advisable to transport the shelf in larger sections during a move and replace any damaged screws rather than buying complete sets.

Conclusion: There are no “official” moving screw sets for Kallax, but there are high-quality individual components available that can make assembly safer and more reliable.

I actually find this question quite interesting, especially because it highlights some of the weaknesses of IKEA furniture.

That almost sounds as if we expect IKEA furniture to be designed for durability with frequent take-down and reassembly – but that’s not really the philosophy behind it. IKEA is known for simple, affordable furniture that often suffers from repeated assembly.

In my opinion, screw sets specifically for Kallax after a move are more of a user-driven desire than something the manufacturer provides.

One could even argue that it’s actually good to buy new screws and connectors after moving, since the old ones might have already lost some holding strength. A huge market for screw sets made especially for Kallax? There probably isn’t one because most users simply rely on standard parts or original IKEA replacement screws.

So: these sets are more of a myth or luxury item that people put together themselves for extensive rebuilds. For everyone else, the rule is probably: just use whatever is available or replace it if broken.

Thanks for the factual input, that sounds plausible!

I agree with that as well. My goal was actually to find a reliable solution that holds up reasonably well even after multiple assemblies and disassemblies.

Could you or others provide more specific recommendations on which screws or connection methods work best?

I want to keep the shelf sturdy without having to buy a completely new one, as replacement isn’t always worth the moving costs and effort. If anyone knows system components that are better than the original, please share!

Thanks to everyone who has contributed so far. It’s already been a huge help.
