Hello everyone,

I have a question that’s been on my mind lately: Are there replacement covers for the open compartments of KALLAX shelves?

I own a KALLAX unit with several open compartments that I want to use differently on a temporary basis. However, I’m missing the option to close these compartments with suitable covers to create a more uniform appearance or to keep out dust.

I know IKEA itself doesn’t offer direct covers as accessories, but maybe there are third-party options, DIY solutions, or recommendations for fitting, sturdy covers?

I would really appreciate any experiences, tips, or suggestions, especially if anyone has looked for or implemented similar solutions before.

Hi everyone! 🙂

I find this question really interesting. Especially with KALLAX, where there are so many individual ways to use it, you often notice that something for "closing off" is missing.

the idea with thin plywood panels covered with foil
is really helpful, in my opinion.

My recommendation would also be to check craft stores for self-adhesive MDF foil – this way you can quickly get lids in matching colors. I once used it to cover compartments of an old shelf, and it looked really nice and wasn’t expensive. 👍

And if you want to remove something later, it’s easy to do as well.

A small tip: just make sure the lids aren’t too heavy, otherwise they can bend the shelf panel or be uncomfortable to take off.

I hope this helps you! 😊

I totally agree! That’s exactly why I like that you can create something both attractive and functional with little effort.

Many users therefore resort to DIY solutions. Common materials for this are plywood or MDF boards\

This kind of initiative is really part of the appeal – although it can sometimes be frustrating if you’re not much of a DIY person.

Has anyone here had negative experiences with similar DIY covers, for example regarding stability or fit? I’m curious whether they generally hold up well or if it’s better to look for another solution.
