ᐅ Are there any reinforcement brackets available at hardware stores that fit Kallax shelving units?

DOGLA49Hello everyone,
I am considering reinforcing my existing Kallax shelf unit from Ikea, especially at the corners where the load is highest. So I wonder: Are there specific reinforcement brackets or connectors available at hardware stores that are designed to fit the exact dimensions and material of Kallax systems?
It is important to me that the brackets are strong enough but not too bulky and that they match well with the wood-based material and its thickness. I have seen some options at various hardware stores, but most either don’t fit precisely or appear oversized.
Does anyone have experience with whether such reinforcement brackets for Kallax shelves are actually available at hardware stores, or do you usually order these parts online or directly from Ikea? And are there any specific product names or sizes to pay attention to when purchasing?
Thanks in advance for your feedback!

Most hardware stores carry standard steel brackets in various sizes, but these are usually not specifically tailored for Kallax. The Kallax wood thickness is about 15mm (0.6 inches), so look for brackets designed for that. Common sizes are 40x40mm (1.6x1.6 inches) or 50x50mm (2x2 inches) brackets, which you can use. If you need a more precise fit, Ikea also sells its own reinforcements that fit better.

If you want to stabilize the shelf, you can also use brackets with slightly shorter legs or so-called flat brackets, which are less bulky.
Another option is small connectors often used for shelves, such as groove or cam lock fittings. These fit a bit better but are usually available online. If you try to find them at a hardware store, look for powder-coated brackets designed for indoor use, as they rust less.
Regarding the material: galvanized brackets generally offer better durability than plain black steel brackets.
It’s also worth mentioning that some users reinforce Kallax shelves with wood glue and dowels to improve stability, especially if screws and brackets are unwanted.

In short: there aren’t brackets at hardware stores that are perfectly tailored to Kallax – they’re basically "one size fits most." But with a bit of DIY know-how, you can make it work well. I used inexpensive corner brackets from the hardware store that were slightly larger but very sturdy and unobtrusive. Sometimes it’s worth filing them down a bit or sanding sharp edges to make them look almost like a "custom fit."
My advice: buy galvanized or powder-coated brackets—they’re durable and won’t rust, and you can always paint them afterwards to improve the appearance. This works great and provides the necessary support without having to spend on expensive specialized parts just for peace of mind.
Luckily, Kallax shelves aren’t the most delicate furniture—simple reinforcements will get you safely sorted in no time. Good luck! 😊
