ᐅ Are there reinforced versions of BILLY shelves available?

Good morning everyone, I am currently considering purchasing Billy shelves for my office and wondering if IKEA offers reinforced versions of these shelves.

Specifically, I am interested in whether there are BILLY models designed for higher loads or heavier weights, for example with stronger materials, thicker shelves, or additional stability features.

I generally like the standard shelves, but I need a solution that can consistently support more weight without sagging or becoming unstable.

Are there official versions or accessories available to increase their stability? Thanks for your helpful advice!

This load significantly exceeds the recommended capacity, so it's clearly a case of an unusual load.

IKEA does not offer thicker shelves for the BILLY series. However, you can try the following methods:

- Purchase 22 mm (0.87 inch) plywood panels (multiplex) from a hardware store, have them cut to BILLY dimensions, and use them as replacement shelves.
- Reinforce the shelves with additional battens screwed to the underside to increase load-bearing capacity.
- Add support slats in the middle of the shelf where possible.

Additionally, cross braces on the back panel improve overall stability.

These measures allow you to use the BILLY beyond the standard load, but always ensure the unit is securely fastened to the wall.

As KUDAISY writes: Custom-built variations are the best solution.

Alternatively, consider metal shelving if you need professional load capacity.

Officially, there are no reinforced BILLY shelves.

Wall mounting is mandatory for heavy loads.

That sounds very interesting, thanks!

If I understand the standard BILLY measurements correctly, the panels should be 40 cm (15 3/4 inches) wide and 28 cm (11 inches) deep. Is that the size I should specify to get a perfect fit?

Does anyone have experience with how to combine these with the shelf fasteners? The original shelves have the built-in small pins, which usually don’t work with custom-made shelves.

The best approach is to insert small metal, plastic, or wooden dowels into the sides of the shelving unit. These act as removable shelf supports. They fit easily into the holes on the side panels and can bear weight.

Another method is to screw the replacement shelves onto the unit using brackets or screws on the side panels. This secures the shelf firmly but means it can no longer be removed.

Original fittings are difficult to use with custom boards, so these alternatives are common.

This is exactly the common stumbling block. To avoid it, the panel should be cut about 2-3 mm (0.08-0.12 inches) thinner so that the plastic peg fits into the bracket.

However, this reduces stability somewhat. A compromise is inevitable.
