Are there reinforced shelves available for the popular Billy bookcases from IKEA?

I plan to heavily load my Billy bookcase with heavy books and binders, but I want to prevent the shelves from bending or even breaking. I am aware that the standard shelves are quite thin and flexible under heavy loads.

Therefore, I am specifically looking for reinforced or thicker replacement shelves offered either by IKEA or third-party suppliers. Details such as material thickness, maximum load capacity, compatibility with standard Billy bookcases, and whether the fixing points are compatible would be helpful.

Perhaps someone has practical experience or recommendations for particularly sturdy alternatives that fit without major modifications. Thanks in advance for your insights!

Yes, there are reinforced shelves available for the Billy. You can have special plywood boards cut to size and drill the original holes again. This significantly increases stability.

Hello!

I think your question is very well phrased and understandable. In fact, IKEA only offers the standard shelves for the Billy bookcases, which are quite thin and not ideal for heavy loads.

Many users opt for plywood or MDF boards of suitable thickness (e.g., 18-22 mm (0.7-0.9 inches)) that they cut to size and adjust to the pre-drilled holes. This significantly increases the load capacity. However, you need to modify them yourself or hire a carpenter.

Additionally, some wood suppliers already offer panels with matching dimensions and pre-drilled holes on the accessory market, sometimes even with a finish.

If you’d like, I can gladly provide a few sources.

This is the most important point.

Original Billy floors are about 1.8 cm (0.7 inches) thick, which is sufficient for light to moderate loads. For very heavy loads, I recommend plywood boards 18 mm (0.7 inches) or thicker, which you can cut to size.

It is also important to secure the sides of the floors with metal supports to prevent any sagging. This ensures the load-bearing capacity.

Other readers here might be able to provide tips on sources.

Thank you, that sounds interesting. Could you please explain that in more detail? Are you referring to the use of additional angle profiles or properly fastened metal brackets that provide extra support to the shelves?

I’m curious because I’m looking not only for stronger shelves but also for better reinforcement against sagging, without having to buy a completely new shelving unit.

Exactly, I mean metal brackets or so-called shelf supports. These are attached to the side panels underneath the shelf to prevent it from sagging.

These supports are available specifically for Billy or as universal versions. They allow you to bear significantly higher loads on a single shelf.
