Hello everyone, I have a question regarding the BILLY shelves from IKEA, which I have been using for years. Since I plan to load these shelves with significantly heavier weights than usual, I am interested to know if there are reinforced or specially suitable screws available for the BILLY shelf series to ensure higher load capacity and stability.

Specifically, I mean the screws used to connect the individual panels and to secure the shelves. So far, my research has only found standard fasteners. Does anyone have experience with stronger screws or alternatives that can be used safely without compromising the safety or integrity of the shelf?

Thanks for your help and tips!

Hello Meoon60,

Regarding your question: IKEA does use standardized screws for BILLY that are rated for the intended load. IKEA does not offer any official "reinforced screws" for BILLY shelves.

However, you can replace the original screws with stronger wood screws made of stainless steel or high-strength steel alloy. It is especially important that the screws have exactly the same length and thread pitch to avoid damaging the material.

Yes, many DIY enthusiasts use so-called particleboard screws with a larger diameter and higher load capacity. However, this does not replace the structural design of the shelf, meaning the material and overall construction. Screws alone can only increase the load capacity to a limited extent.

In addition to TRADI: The load capacity of a BILLY shelf is primarily determined by the shelves and the overall structure, rather than the screws.

There are no specially marked "reinforced screws" for BILLY from IKEA.

If you want to use screws with higher tensile strength, it is recommended to use steel screws of strength class 8.8 or higher. It is essential to ensure compatible dimensions, such as length and thread type (Spax or similar particle board screws).

Otherwise, metal brackets for reinforcing the internal structure are also advisable if the load significantly exceeds the standard.

There are no reinforced screws directly from IKEA for BILLY.

Alternative: Larger chipboard screws can be used, but always pay attention to the dimensions.

Additional stability is better achieved with metal brackets.

Regarding the question: No, IKEA does not offer stronger screws for BILLY.

You can use thicker screws yourself, but the load capacity also depends on the wall mounting and the shelf material.

For higher loads, additional reinforcements are advisable.

This information is very helpful to me, thank you!

I have an additional question: What about the quality of screws from other sources? Is the extra effort worth it to use more expensive screws (e.g., stainless steel or hardened steel)? Or are the original screws from IKEA actually sufficiently strong for normal applications?

Are there any experiences regarding durability and load-bearing capacity over long-term use?
