Hello everyone,
I am currently looking into stabilizing BILLY bookcases and wondering if there are any specially reinforced back panels available for BILLY units. I have some models that I would like to use for heavier items and am unsure whether the standard thin particleboard back panels are sufficient or if there is an official reinforced version that significantly improves stability. Does anyone have experience with this or know if IKEA offers such stronger back panels separately?
Perhaps someone also has tips on how to reinforce BILLY back panels if original parts are not available. Thanks in advance!

Could you possibly say how thick the MDF or plywood back panels should be at minimum to noticeably improve stability?I installed an 8 mm (5/16 inch) plywood back panel, and it makes a huge difference!! The shelving unit is now almost indestructible 😉 I can only recommend this to anyone who wants to store heavier items.

It is important that the back panel is secured on all sidesI completely agree – this is really crucial! This way everything stays rock solid and stable. Good luck with that!
