Hello everyone, I recently furnished my living room with the IKEA Kallax shelving unit and often use it to place plants on. I’ve noticed that water droplets, whether from watering or evaporation, frequently fall onto the surface of the Kallax and cause slight damage or at least leave stains.

I’m specifically wondering if there are any special protective mats or suitable covers for the Kallax unit that reliably protect against water droplets without significantly affecting its appearance. I’m mainly looking for a practical solution that is waterproof and easy to clean.

Perhaps someone has experience or tips on which materials or products work well for this purpose? Thanks in advance!

Yes, there are waterproof plastic or rubber mats that can be placed on top of the Kallax. You can simply cut them to size yourself. This provides reliable protection against water dripping from plants.

I would like to approach this topic in a more structured way, as the Kallax shelf with its open compartments is visually appealing but can be sensitive to moisture. For protection against water drops from plants, I recommend the following procedure:

1. Material selection: Waterproof and easy-to-clean materials like PVC mats, transparent plastic table protectors, or special rubber or silicone mats work best.
2. Cutting to size: Since the Kallax comes in various size options, the protective mat should be cut to fit. This is usually easy to do with thin plastic sheets.
3. Installation: The mats can be simply laid out and, if necessary, secured with double-sided tape to prevent slipping.

Common mistakes include using mats that are too thick, which can spoil the look, or materials that are hard to clean and quickly become dirty. Another option is to use cut-to-size trays or coasters for individual plants that catch the water drops directly.

In conclusion: There are no official "Kallax protective mats" from IKEA, but universally available protective mats serve the purpose well.

Interesting question! I find the approach a bit unusual. Why place plants directly on the Kallax? If you value your furniture, you should put plants on a separate surface, like a small side table or sturdy coasters.

That’s the key issue: either you protect the surface, or you maintain the appearance. It’s rare to achieve both at the same time. Also, water drops from plants usually indicate somewhat careless watering. My motto: if you love plants, you accept a few water stains on furniture or invest in a well-placed mat that doesn’t need to be hidden.

I can understand well that this topic is important for Klalo. Plants enhance any space, but they also come with the challenge of excess water.

It has happened to me as well that my Kallax shelf was damaged by water drips, which is understandably frustrating. That’s why I believe that a small protective mat or coaster doesn’t ruin the “problem,” but rather is a way to enjoy the furniture longer. Perhaps one could also consider creative solutions, such as decorative trays or pads made from natural materials that are waterproof yet attractive.

If anyone has tips on materials that are particularly durable and discreet, I would greatly appreciate any suggestions.
