Hello everyone,

I’m planning to paint my Ikea Platsa modular furniture myself, but I have a few practical questions before I get started. Are there any proven tips or specific methods you would recommend to ensure a durable and clean finish?

I’m mainly interested in what preparations are advisable, how to best treat the surface, which types of paint work well, and whether there are special tools that make painting easier.

Also, I want to avoid the paint peeling or becoming uneven over time. What is the best way to prevent this?

I’d appreciate any answers, especially if you can share your own experiences!

First, thoroughly clean and sand the surface, then apply a primer.

Water-based acrylic paint is best suited for this. After painting, allow it to dry completely and apply a clear varnish for protection.

You’re addressing important points.

The surface of PLATSA is melamine-coated, which does not accept paint well. Therefore, it is essential to sand it very finely to ensure the paint adheres.

- Use sandpaper with a grit of 240 to 320.
- A good primer, such as a special melamine primer, significantly improves adhesion.
- For paint, I recommend water-based acrylic lacquer, as it is more durable than standard wall paint.
- Apply several thin layers instead of one thick one.
- Finally, seal with a matte or satin clear coat to make the surface more resistant.

Tools: A small foam roller provides smooth finishes, while brushes are better suited for corners.

If you have any questions about the optimal procedure, feel free to ask.

I can confirm this from my own experience; that was the most challenging part for me.

At first, I was also worried because sanding and priming seemed complicated. But with patience and careful work, it really works out well. The important thing is not to get discouraged if the paint doesn’t look perfect the first time.

It’s also helpful to take short breaks in between to let the paint dry properly and avoid bubbles.

If you feel like something isn’t turning out as expected, it can be useful to get feedback from friends or here in the forum to stay motivated.
