Hello everyone, I am currently working on lighting for my IKEA KALLAX shelves and wondering if there are any plug-and-play lighting systems that can be easily integrated without much effort. It is important to me that these systems are specifically designed for the KALLAX and require little to no drilling or complicated wiring. Does anyone know of reliable solutions that can be purchased ready-made and installed simply, ideally with RGB options or dimmable features? I look forward to your tips and experiences!

I just wanted to emphasize: I was really happy with my Govee RGB LED set. It's very easy to install, and controlling it via the app is really fun! 🙂 It fits perfectly with KALLAX if you want to add a bit of color.

With Hue, you do need to cut the strips yourself a bit and possibly buy some clips.
Thanks for the recommendations! How much effort is involved in cutting these LED strips? Do you need to have some electrical knowledge for that?

The app control sounds convenient; I want something fairly modern and flexible. Are there differences in power supply among the sets, for example, pure USB vs. a power adapter? Could there be issues with cable management depending on how the shelf is positioned?

Most LED strips have printed cut marks where you can easily cut them with simple scissors – the power supply is not disconnected, as the strip is built in sections. Electrical expertise is only required if you want to solder fragments again or use different types of connections.

Regarding power supply: USB LED strips are convenient and provide a standardized 5V, usually with lower power than 12V strips with a power adapter. The longer the strip, the more a power adapter is recommended, as USB cables can lose voltage over longer distances.

For cable management, I recommend using cable channels or concealed cable channels. Cable ties can also be used. Especially in a living room, it should look tidy.

One more thing comes to mind: If you don’t have direct access to wall outlets, a battery-powered LED system might also be worth considering. These are usually more expensive and have a limited runtime, but they operate completely without cables – making installation very flexible and hassle-free.

Yes, there are significant differences. USB typically provides 5 V at a maximum of 2-3 A (10-15 W), which is sufficient for short LED strips. Longer LED strips usually require 12 V or 24 V power adapters for stable operation to avoid brightness loss. A power adapter also offers more power capacity. USB can be more convenient if you already have a portable charger or power bank. The downside is that USB cables usually need to be shorter. On shelves, you can manage this quite well with suitable cable channels. The most important thing is that the power source matches the system and that the voltage requirements are observed.

Thank you very much to everyone for the detailed answers and tips! I now have a much clearer overview of the available options.

The idea of battery-powered systems sounds very appealing; this would be a great solution for me due to the lack of nearby power outlets. However, I still need to check whether the runtime and brightness meet my requirements.

I will also take a closer look at the recommendations for individual compartment lights.

If anyone has practical experience with battery lighting on KALLAX, I would be very grateful for further feedback or even sources for purchasing. 🙂
