Hello everyone,
I am currently considering upgrading or replacing the door systems on my IKEA KALLAX shelves. Specifically, I am wondering if magnetic replacement handles are available for the KALLAX doors.
By magnetic handles, I mean ones that can simply attach to the door panel without screws or complicated installation, allowing easy use thanks to their magnetic attachment.
I find this especially practical for quickly opening and closing the doors without needing to buy spare parts or drill holes.
Does anyone know of such magnetic replacement handles compatible with KALLAX doors? Or are there alternative solutions or innovations to replace the original door handles without damaging the shelf or the doors?
Thank you for your tips and experiences!

I think magnetic handle ideas are really innovative – they save you the hassle of dealing with screws! 😉
However, I haven’t found a suitable solution for the KALLAX system myself. Maybe magnetic handles are more of a DIY project where you need to get a bit creative.
For example, simply attach a small metal plate inside, add a magnetic handle – done.
Important: Always make sure the magnets aren’t too strong, otherwise the door will slam shut or you might lose control when opening it.
I think this kind of solution works well for people who enjoy DIY and trying out new ideas.

JEREMIAH3823 Aug 2022 12:42I can understand the appeal of magnetic handles – for me, it also feels like a practical convenience to work without tools and screws.
If the goal is to avoid damaging the KALLAX doors, a temporary but secure solution would be ideal.
So far, I have only seen that these magnetic handles usually need to be custom-made or require special adapters, which IKEA does not offer.
I hope someone will share good news or a purchase link here.

If you don’t want to drill holes or use screws, you can attach small metal plates to the door with strong adhesive tape. Thanks, that’s a very helpful tip!
I’m also curious which adhesive tape you used – does it hold well on the slightly rougher surface of the KALLAX door? And is the metal plate thin enough not to warp the door?
Also, how does it look? Is it very noticeable, or a discreet solution?
I would appreciate any further details.

The metal plate was made of thin stainless steel, about 0.5 mm (0.02 inches) thick, so it doesn’t add bulk or deform the door.

And is the metal plate thin enough not to warp the door?Yes, because the material is very thin, you don’t notice any difference when closing the door.

Also, how does it look? Is it very noticeable or a discreet solution? It is visible but not intrusive, since the plates are attached on the inside and only the handle is seen from the outside. It’s advisable to choose the metal to visually match or even cover it on the inside with film.

For a stable, long-lasting solution, I would still recommend mechanical fasteningThis is an important point. Magnetic handles work best as flexible, temporary solutions or for furniture with light use.
For heavily used doors, such as on KALLAX units, permanent fixing with screws ensures reliable and secure attachment.
Additionally, the magnetic effect often declines over time, for example, when dust affects the adhesion.
In short: magnetic replacement handles are a nice option but not a fully adequate alternative to original fastenings.
