Hello everyone,

I am currently looking into IKEA Billy bookcases and wondering if there are any known weak points that commonly cause issues during use.

Specifically, I am interested in whether there are design flaws, material weaknesses, or assembly difficulties that could lead to problems in everyday use, such as instability under heavier loads or warping.

Has anyone had experience with this and can provide detailed insights on what weaknesses I should watch out for to ensure the best long-term solution? Thanks in advance!

If the shelves are sagging, either too much weight is placed on one board or the installation was not done correctly.

Alternative: Reinforce with additional battens or use a shelf with thicker boards.

The back panel mainly serves to stabilize against lateral sway but is not designed to support heavy loads.

Always use wall mounting to make the shelf significantly more stable.

Hi!

From my own experience, I can say that Billy shelves are quite reliable with normal use. 🙂

In my case, the loads are not extremely heavy, and I have securely fixed the shelves to the wall.

That’s true, the coating is not very durable – but considering the price, I think that’s reasonable. If you need more robustness, custom-made or heavier-duty solutions are probably better.

So: fine for simple purposes, but rather questionable for heavy or professional use.

I love my Billy shelves! 😄 But the secret really lies in proper installation and maintenance!

If you securely fix them to the wall and avoid overloading, you can enjoy them for a long time. The small supports you slide under the shelves also help a lot.

Always use wall anchors; this makes the shelf much more stable.

Exactly, that’s what makes the difference! Good luck!

A common issue is that the shelves tend to sag over time

Thank you all for your valuable advice! I can see that my impression was correct and that the weaknesses mainly lie in the load-bearing capacity of the shelves, the mounting, and the sensitivity of the materials used.

I will definitely take to heart the tips regarding wall mounting and reinforcement. I’ll see if I can add a few extra supports or wooden battens to improve longevity.

I will also keep an eye on the edge banding and perhaps use suitable edge protectors to reduce wear.

Thanks for the exchange and the tips! 🙂
