Good morning everyone,

I have a specific question because I recently tried assembling the IKEA Platsa furniture series and encountered some difficulties.

My question is: Are there any known, systematic issues with assembling IKEA Platsa that go beyond the usual challenges of furniture assembly? Perhaps specifically regarding the fit of the modules, the instructions, or the stability of the individual parts?

I sometimes feel that some parts are not manufactured precisely, which makes assembly more difficult. The instructions are quite detailed but cause uncertainty in some steps, especially with the connectors.

Has anyone here had experience with the Platsa series and can share common problems or solutions?

Thanks in advance for your insights!

Hello Sezer,

Regarding your question: Yes, there are indeed some well-known issues with IKEA PLATSA that are frequently mentioned.

Primarily, the instructions require careful attention, as some steps are not always entirely clear, which can cause confusion for less experienced builders. Additionally, many report that the plastic connectors (brackets and dowels) sometimes do not fit perfectly, resulting in sticking or wobbling.

The fit of the individual parts is generally acceptable, but with some units, parts can be slightly misaligned – this particularly affects the assembly of doors and some cover panels.

A tip for dealing with this: reinforcement using additional screws or brackets can help, especially when securing the modules to the wall.

These are the most common points I have gathered from experience reports so far. If you like, I can go into more detail on specific steps.

Thanks for the quick response, Julien. It does sound like the stability of PLATSA might be borderline without extra measures?

I’m specifically interested in how often the instructions are actually unclear. Some steps might be easy for experienced DIYers, but IKEA also wants to reach beginners. Are there known points where the assembly manual generally fails or at least isn’t intuitive?

And how would you compare the situation to other IKEA furniture in a similar price range? For example, I’ve assembled Malm or BILLY before, and their assembly felt a bit more straightforward.

It would be great if you could shed some more light on this.

Hello Sezer, hello Julien,

to answer the questions as objectively as possible:

- The assembly instructions for IKEA PLATSA are detailed, but the explanation of the connection systems lacks clarity. The connecting plates and the so-called cam lock mechanism are often confusing for non-professionals.

- It is also problematic that small manufacturing tolerances exist in the module parts, leading to some inaccuracies in fit. This particularly affects door hinges and edges.

- Compared to other series like MALM, PLATSA components are more modular and complex in design, which increases the likelihood of errors.

- In terms of stability, PLATSA is solid when properly anchored to the wall. However, without wall mounting, it can wobble despite the provided connecting fittings.

My advice: Have the appropriate tools ready early for installation (e.g., cordless drill with torque control), tighten screws as needed, slightly adjust sealing elements if necessary—and very importantly—do not forget the wall mounting.

With this approach, the most common issues with PLATSA can be managed well.

I completely agree! 💡

I assembled the PLATSA last year for my child’s room, and yes, it was a bit tricky. But with some patience, enough breaks (coffee was essential!), and careful attention, most of the challenges can be overcome.

Especially the wall mounting should not be underestimated. My first attempt without attaching it to the wall was a real mistake. The unit wobbled much more than I expected! 😅

And yes, sometimes the connecting parts feel like a bit of magic, almost like a puzzle when you figure out the ‘correct’ way to turn them.

So: Don’t lose heart, just take it step by step and pay attention to what you’re putting together. Personally, I found it almost meditative in the end when everything was standing and fitting perfectly. 😉
