Hello everyone,
I recently purchased a Brimnes chest of drawers set from Ikea and wanted to ask if anyone here has experience with the drawer slides â especially if there are any known defects or common weak points with these drawer runners?
I noticed that the front drawer moves a bit stiffly and sometimes even sticks slightly, which I donât think is normal. Since Ikea is usually known for good value and reliability, I want to make sure I havenât simply overlooked an assembly error or if there might be material tolerances or issues with the slides that often cause problems.
Does anyone have specific experience or advice on whether the Brimnes drawer slides frequently fail, or if I should contact customer service directly? Are there any tips for fixing this without having to replace the entire mechanism?
Thanks in advance for your input!

I noticed that the drawer at the front runs a bit stiff and sometimes even sticks, which I donât think is normal.I know exactly what you mean! For me, it helped to completely remove the drawer and then thoroughly clean and lightly lubricate the slides and rollers. After that, it worked almost like new again.
However, depending on usage, it can still be annoying. So be careful when fully loaded â the Brimnes drawers are rather delicately constructed.
To clarify, here is a brief overview of the construction and possible defects of Ikea Brimnes drawer slides:
- Construction: metal slide with plastic rollers, push-to-open mechanism available on some newer models
- Defects:
- Plastic rollers can break or come loose
- Metal slides can bend due to improper installation
- Jamming often caused by dirt or misalignment
- Causes: heavy usage, overloading, inadequate cleaning
- Troubleshooting steps:
1. Remove the drawer
2. Inspect and clean the slide
3. Check the rollers and replace if necessary
4. Readjust the slide
Replacement of damaged plastic rollers is usually straightforward and inexpensive through Ikea. When doing repairs yourself, screws should be tightened carefully but not over-tightened to avoid material damage.

I had similar issues with my Brimnes; the rollers were not properly adjusted. This is a crucial point. Especially with inexpensive furniture, the assembly often lacks precise adjustment, which later causes jamming or uneven movement.
Proper alignment of the guides and rollers ensures even distribution of the load on the sliding tracks. Otherwise, material fatigue can occur quickly.
Also, take the opportunity to check for dirt, as wood chips or dust can worsen the problem.
