Hello everyone! I am currently working on planning a new room layout and am considering the versatile IKEA Platsa systems among other options. However, I have a fairly important question: Are there versions of the IKEA Platsa system where the furniture already comes with integrated lighting?
Specifically, I am interested in solutions where the LEDs or other lighting elements are factory-installed, so no additional light sources or external attachments are needed. I am looking at under-cabinet lighting that illuminates shelves or inside cabinet walls, as well as any built-in accent lighting on the fronts or edges.
If such versions are not available directly from IKEA, I would also appreciate tips or best-practice ideas on how to best implement indirect or integrated lighting within the Platsa system. Thanks in advance!

Hello Blajo,
Regarding your question: IKEA does not officially offer versions of the PLATSA system with factory-installed lighting. The system itself is modular and designed for individual customization, but factory lighting installation is not provided by IKEA.
What does work are separate lighting solutions compatible with PLATSA – for example, the "BETRILIGHT" LED strips or battery-operated lights from IKEA, which can be easily added afterwards. These are flexible and can be mounted inside shelves or on cabinet sides.
If you want professional integration, this is often possible with third-party lighting systems that can be adapted to the PLATSA modules. In general, PLATSA is suitable for individual DIY lighting projects because it offers open sections and concealed cable channels.
I recommend checking carefully before planning how the power supply will be handled and whether there is a socket nearby. This way, you can integrate the lighting neatly and safely.

Actually, IKEA does not offer any official versions of the PLATSA system with factory-integrated lighting. Thanks for clarifying that so clearly! I was really wondering if there might be a hidden option. But I still think it’s great how flexible the PLATSA systems can be.
With battery-operated lights or LED strips, you can get really creative, especially if you don’t want to drill permanently or need a flexible solution. I’m using a combination of PLATSA and "Omlopp" LED strips myself, and it looks really great!
So: Don’t worry, even without integrated lighting from IKEA, you can do some really cool things with PLATSA. Just be brave and dive into DIY! 🙂
Hello Blajo,
to address your question in more detail: IKEA PLATSA is sold without built-in lighting, that is correct. However, from a technical standpoint, the design of the modules is very well suited for retrofitting LED lighting if you want a clean solution.
- First, you should plan the power supply. The modules themselves do not have integrated cable channels, but you can use power strips behind the modules or hidden through the back panels, as some modules offer back panels with cable openings.
- For lighting, I recommend LED profiles with diffusers, which can be mounted on the shelves or inside the cabinets. LED strips with 12V are best, as they are safer and easier to handle.
- If you want large-area lighting, consider dimmable controllers that you can place discreetly. This significantly increases comfort during later use.
Another important note: Some PLATSA fronts are designed in a way that makes lighting installation difficult because they are flush-mounted or framed. Therefore, I recommend planning the lighting inside the cabinet or integrating it into the shelves.
If you like, feel free to share more about the planned room size and usage, and I can provide more specific advice.
